Visit this impressive townhouse and discover a 16th century family home. The remains of this late 16th century house show how architecture changed from the heavily defended tower house to a new, more domestic scale. Sir Thomas MacLellan of Bombie built the castle in 1582 to function as a grand family home. Head ‘below stairs’ into the dark vaults to get a sense of the working conditions of family servants and look out for the Laird’s Lug’, a secret spy hole behind the great hall fireplace, from which the laird could eavesdrop on his guests.

There are loads of ruined castles in South West Scotland but few right in the middle of a town. I have been to this castle before as a child and came again for the first time in 20 odd years this summer. The grounds are...More

We visited during our stay in Scotland, the castle is enjoyable to walk around with plenty to see and lots of ruins still standing. Allow a little over an hour to walk around. There is a fantastic yet bizarre eavesdropping room to visit!

Castle has good info posts around the grounds. The upper level includes a little room for the head guy (laird???) from which to eavesdrop on guests in the main ghall. The jail room was suitably grim.

We visited here with 2 children aged 9 & 3. We have been here many times before so know we could get round the castle very quickly. However, the children were given a 'treasure hunt' trail with things to find - some of them were...More

This is an imposing building, although derelict. At present, it is being rebuilt slowly, by craftsmen. Well worth a visit.

Seems fitting to have this lovely ruin in the midst of an equally charming town. It is not as old as some castles but still a very interesting history. Restorations were in progress.

Close to a nice harbour, located right in the middle of the High Street in Kirkudbright. A very charming castle, right now getting repaired as you will notice scaffolding around. According to the person in charge of selling tickets, a ''real needed one''. Got to...More

MacLellan's Castle has a little office staffed by volunteers when it's open, and our host, Norman, was enthusiastic and welcoming. He was willing to chat and give us extra information in answer to all our questions. Small entry fee it well worth it for a...More

This was the best castle tour ever, thanks to Barbara, and her exceptional knowledge of the family history, and Cyril, and his in depth knowledge of the castle itself. I am proud to leave my ancestral home in such capable hands!
