Montrose Basin is the enclosed estuary of the South Esk River. The reserve includes a 4-star visitor centre along with four remote bird hides. Covering 750 hectares, Montrose Basin is home to over 80,000 migratory birds including pink-footed geese, Arctic terns, knots and sedge warblers. The four- star visitor centre offers a great day out for all the family in Angus. Highlights include telescopes, binoculars and live footage of migratory birds. Children will love the interactive toys and games such as microscopes, species peepholes and puzzles. Children's activities and themed events are held regularly, and formal and informal educational groups run throughout the year. Fairtrade tea and coffee can be enjoyed with panoramic views across the Basin, and a range of wildlife gifts are available from the gift shop.

We visited with our 4 year old and 8 month old and really enjoyed our time there. While the space is fairly small, the room they have kitted out for kids is so packed with activities, games and hands on ideas that our son would have happily played there for hours. They even have a little viewing area for kids... More

Just passed Montrose Basin nature reserve on the Aberdeen train. What a fantastic looking place! Miles of mudflats and mussel beds with thousands of geese and wading birds. Deserves greater recognition.

I'm not sure what I expected when I walked in to this visitor centre but I was extremely pleasantly surprised as I hadn't realised that this was a hide for the Montrose Basin and as such was kitted out with binoculars, information on all the birds and all British birds. There was a shop and cafe but we never bothered... More

This is a great center, with knowledgable staff, telescopes and information boards. It was great to browse the center and view the wildlife in the basin. Overall, well worth a visit.

Great spot for waders and wildfowl. Telescopes provided for visitors - essential as the estuary covers a vast area. Helpful staff and a shop with all sorts of birdie things and gift items.

We visited Montrose on Sunday 8th for the SWT Goose Breakfast which cost about £8 each. We arrived at the centre for 6.30am and were met by staff who then directed us to an area beside the cemetery to watch 60,000 pink footed geese take off at sunrise. The staff were really helpful and gave us loads of information and... More

A centre with excellent views across the Basin, the centre has excellent scopes and binoculars for spotting wildlife as well as reference books and knowledgeable centre staff to advise and guide your viewing. In September there were many Lapwing, waders including Curlews, heron and seals on the sandbanks. A few pounds to visit but well worth it if you enjoy... More

I took visiting relatives up to the centre on a bit of a rainy day. They very much enjoyed the centre, the volunteers are very helpful and informative. Unfortunately for us we timed it wrong as we just missed the kingfisher and the tide was in, but we still saw plenty. I've been before with my great niece who loved... More

Well we went hoping on a chance of seeing the Kingsolver. Alas, no such luck today. We'll be back again as we have never seen one apart in pictures. Apart from that it's still a great place to be with all the other bird life to see. There is also seals to see for those that like them. Sprays can... More

Visited Montrose Basin with two teenage grandchildren. We first tried to get outside on to a suitable walk but the nearest was some distance away (car needed) and not too easy to locate (only to find we were sharing the path with some cattle with their calves - so decided not to proceed). Had to do with the inside facilities... More
