Arbroath Abbey is a testament to the dynamic piety of Scotland’s medieval monarchs. It was founded in 1178 by King William I ‘the Lion’ as a memorial to his childhood friend Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered in 1170.

good history to the abbey even for a local people and visitors alike who come to visit the abbey enjoyed the walk around and reading all about the abbey, a great place for a great day out.

The visitor centre has some great exhibits and offers an informative introduction to the abbey. Plenty to explore and useful information boards scattered throughout the grounds.

Found this place to be very interesting. Lots of history linked to the Abbey. There are more than just ruins here. Ended up spending much more time here than we thought we would.
