- Travellers074096Northern Ireland, United Kingdom13 contributionsBeautiful forest parkWalked most of the black trail and part of the red trail and saw really beautiful forests, river walks, and mountain views along the farside boundary. A mixture of everything and a good workout too. Looking forward to my next visit.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 21 March 2024
- Em4499Northern Ireland, United Kingdom199 contributionsCaravan site review - wonderful!Caravan Park review. Wonderful and breathtaking views of the forest. The caravan park is set overlooking the monument and mountains above. The pitches are first come, first served so that oils advise arriving as early as possible. We had a decent pitch facing towards the amenities with fields behind us. EHU points are shared between pitches and water could be 20-30m away so had to use the water barrel. Toilets and showers are clean and plenty of them. Chemical disposal point is behind the showers. Walks are fantastic, children and dog had a brilliant time along the river. Very reasonably priced. Think an on site restaurant would do extremely well here. We will definitely return, kids have said it is their favourite to date!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 June 2024
- Denice M4 contributionsbeautiful defo recommendthis place is fab we loved it every1 so friendly and the staff a the front were lovley tents were separated from caravans was brilliant. so clean and security were always seen going about. the forest was beautiful the stepping stones were my favourite 😍Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 June 2024
- Olivier L4 contributionsSpend a whole day hereThe taxi dropped me off at the gates and I walked the long drive-way to the car park and then down the trails. This place is beautiful but HUGE! If you are planning a visit then plan to spend many hours here. There are lots of paths and each of them are so beautiful. If you visit the area then you must visit here.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 July 2024
- lynmgrahamNewtownabbey, United Kingdom24 contributionsBEWARE dog owner not in control of their dogHad a lovely walk in glorious sunshine this morning on the river walk. That is until near the end when one of two medium sized black dogs ran barking loudly towards us.Not everyone is comfortable around dogs and the woman with them made it clear she didn't understand this ! The dog took quite a while to be brought under control. A frightening end to our visit. I warned several people with young children to be wary. An irresponsible dog owner has made me wary of returning. She put it on a lead(eventually) and said she didn't have to. Do dogs require a lead ? The scenery was beautiful and the sounds of the river hypnotic.Sadly the negative encounter with the dog and its walker marred an otherwise delightful morning.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024
- KirkyGreen Hammerton, United Kingdom377 contributionsHow to do this outstanding attractionAs a folly fanatic I absolutely loved Tollymore. So much curiousity, character and beauty in an estate that deserves to be far more widely known. The bridges and river are a delight and the hermitage is the star of the show. Some tips: 1. Ask for both the guide as well as the historical leaflet on arrival at the car park pay hut. I got one on entry and the other only when I returned with a query. Note that, confusingly, the maps are oriented differently. The various feature are numbered chronologically rather than in a recommend sequence which would be more helpful. Devise your own route. NB: You may see reference to 'White Fort Cashel' on some maps. Don't bother trying to find it. The site is no more than a mound of stones among the bracken! 2. Allow a good half day to do all the attractions. There are many to see and it's quite a large park. 3. Explore on foot. Yes, there are cycle paths through the estate but they don't provide access to everything. 4. Oddly, the restaurant is closed but there is a snack van parked outside. 5. No guide book is on sale either but you can get the excellent book titled 'Tollymore - the story of an Irish demesne' @ £10 incl P&P from Ulster Architectural Heritage. 6. The park closes at dusk which, on my visit in early August, was 8pm. Admission per car is £5.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 August 2024

Hmm … so difficult to give a rating as it depends on what I’m reviewing, so here goes.
Positive - the forest was amazing! Great trails, lovely scenery and clear signage. An absolute delight.
Could be better … we stayed at the Tollymore Camp Site. Great location but, facilities etc were disappointing. We use a lot of sites and were quite surprised. Access to water and electric were good, pitches were good, location was great.
However - the toilets, particularly the gents were poor. There was a lot of flouting of guidelines / rules with respect to noise, loud music, car usage and late driving / ball games near caravans/ motorhomes and this didn’t seem to be policed. There were also so many cars everywhere with most people having at least two and up to 4 cars. The real pinnacle was at the chemical disposal point where there was a heap of 💩 and toilet paper on the grid over the disposal.
Such a shame as we loved the forest park and it was an amazing location. Just needs a bit of TLC and more ‘policing’.

This place is stunning - the walks along the river are so peaceful and natural. I love how the forest park connects to walkways that take you up into the Mourne mountains themselves. The £5 entry per car is a little expensive, but once you arrive the scenery will blow you away. Such a beautiful place to go!

We LOVED our walk through this beautiful park. We went primarily to explore the Game of Thrones filming locations, which were really cool (though you have to know what you're looking for as there are no markers or indicators), but we ended up truly relishing in the beauty of the park. The walk of the Game of Thrones sites was about 2 miles in total (with a few photo stops along the way). I would highly recommend this park even if you're a GOT fan or not.

This place is simply magic. You can go and spend the day with family by lounging on the many grassy areas. You have BBQ areas, wooden benches, Riverside areas. There is normally is food and drinks truck supplying various but bring a lunch, flask etc... to keep you going for the day. There are several designated walking routes to suit ages and abilities. The River Walk is just under 6Km which was ideal for the family and you can stop off and enjoy the water and waterfalls. I've also booked a pitch with electric power point for overnight stay in the park which was excellent. You need to book in peak and busy times but worth the visit, great place.

Beautiful area of County Down with easy hiking, old forest and scenic walks around the Shimna River. My wife and I spent a little over an hour hiking around and taking pictures of old bridges and some ruins. An unfortunate storm had made several of the longer trails inaccessible but what we saw was great. Plenty of parking too!

Having visited this area many times in the past, I took a friend who had never been before. It was a hot, sunny day and we were looking forward to a pleasant walk under the trees. Having paid for admission and been duly given a site map, we selected the River walk, however, within a few minutes we began to encounter blocks on this path and diversion signs. It became clear that there were several places where erosion had taken place and paths were having to be restored. As a result, we had to find a different way back and ended up getting lost. What was intended to be a refreshing walk under the trees turned out to be an exhausting experience leaving us hot and disappointed. What we could not understand was that we had been given our copy of the map on entrance without any comments to warn us that at least one of the walks was no longer possible. Had this happened we could have planned a different walk and had a more enjoyable experience. Having returned to the car park at last, we looked forward to having a cool drink or ice cream under one of the trees and so approached a van which was advertising refreshments with a very large replica of an ice cream cone nearby - however, even though the van was open, we were unable to find anyone to serve us. Some nearby workmen informed us that they 'had been there', however after waiting for some time, we were forced to leave without anything, and eventually managed to find some refreshment in Dundrum on the way home. The car park was well filled and it was incredible to see such a lack of facilities at such a famous site.

Really pleasant afternoon walk by the river with the kids. We took the 5k walk and it wasnt crowded and parking fees are currently suspended. Felt like being in Scotland with the tall pines and mountain backdrop

Was a lovely day, weather was very warm and we enjoyed a lovely walk and ice-cream, you can choose from a few different length walks so there is some for the beginners and others for the more experienced walkers. There is not many rest places on the longer walks for be warned if you choose this you will have to sit on the ground if you want to rest. We were lucky enough to find a few tree stumps that had been cut to make a seating area and table to enjoy our lunch in the shade. These is some viewing spots to locate on your walk that provide some nice photo opportunity's. If you go on a very warm day you can take a dip in the river that flows through the forest. All in all is was a love day out.

Tollymore Forest is a lovely place to visit, you can decide if you want to do a long 7-8 mile walk or the much shorter lovely routes. Sneakers are suitable for the mountain trail. Lots of picnic tables.
£5 entry fee.

On a fine morning we visited this ancient estate and walked about three miles on a suggested walk which took us through wooded landscape following the river uphill towards the Mourne mountains. The river was in spate, the trees in their autumn colours, the pathways easy to walk with firm surface. Our five year old grandson was fascinated by all he saw and all ffiur of us revelled in a beautiful, peaceful and memorable stroll which delighted our senses.

Can I bring a dog to tollymore camping?
I have recently booked and don't remember it asking anything about whether or not I will have a dog.

How to get to tollymore forest park from Newcastle? I've just been doing research and turned out It's only accessible by car. Are there taxis going there. I mean a taxi app like uber?

Ignore that last message I wrote that's low season prices I gave you . It's £18 per night for a pitch with no electricity and £20.50 for a pitch with electricity per night 🙂

We are hoping to stop at the park en route from Belfast to Dublin:
Are there buses/public transport leaving from Belfast to this park? And are there buses leaving from this park, but going to Dublin?
Written 5 March 2019
Translink operate a bus service to Bryansford village and it is a short walk from there to the forest park.
The Mourne Rambler is a bus service which stops at all the main walking routes from May to September each year.

What's the best option for about 2 hours time to maximize Game of Thrones attractions? I saw a response on here that was a bit dated. Do rangers mark the maps? Or should we go with a tour and if so which?
Written 13 August 2018
They have them marked on the main map and you get small ones to carry. Just mark them on yours
