The Downpatrick and County Down Railway runs through the drumlin countryside of County Down - St. Patrick's Country - over the River Quoile and under the graceful Down Cathedral. With a mix of steam and diesel trains, and vintage carriages, there's plenty for train fans of all ages - from wee kids to "big kids". Run by volunteers, society membership entitles you to free travel.

We all had a great trip and enjoyed seeing round the workshop and old carriages in Downpatrick. The train journey itself was good and we all had a nice relaxing tea break at Inch Abbey which was great with the sun out,so peaceful. My only very minor gripe is that it is a short journey....but that's because we all enjoyed... More

Hi Stuart, regrettably the length of line is not up to us! All I can suggest is writing to the Chair of the local council and expressing your support for our planned line extension to try and get the land. More

First visit to this place and the kids and I really enjoyed it we got our tickets fairly quickly and the place was quite busy. Because it was easter, there was a hunt to do which ment we were also looking out for bunny's and dolls and once found we would mark it off our list which we were giving.... More

It was to be a showery day and we had the grand kids to entertain ...so a trip to the steam trains grabbed there attention. Easy to find, we soon found ourselves thrown back to the 1960s. Kids loved it and we spent our time with memories of our youth. Did the walk up to the Abbey which kept the... More

Well signposted in the centre of Downpatrick with free onsite parking. The ticket office, platform and staff all take you back to the bygone days of steam. We took plenty of photos of the steam train and then settled into our carriage. The train took off (late!) but it doesn't go fast so you can have a good look around,... More

We traveled to Inch Abbey on a steam train there you can get a snack onboard the buffet carriage or bring a picnic to enjoy at the beautiful Inch Abbey. Return to Downpatrick on the train then visit... More

The museum was very interesting and the staff were very friendly and were happy to explain the rolling stock on display and answer any questions. The steam journey to Inch Abbey is too short a ride.A return trip via the curve to King Magnus Halt from Inch Abbey would make this a longer better experience. The buffet carriage at Inch Abbey is... Very enjoyable trip to Downpatrick Train Station. Staff very courteous and informative. Staff were particularly kind to my nephew who has Special Needs. He loved the train journey to Inch Abbey as he adores Thomas the Tank Engine. Thank you all so much.

On the day we had our visit, we where fortunate to meet the volunteers who restore the engines and carriages. We where taken to the workshops and had a couple of hours learning all about the problems of trying to make the carriages as the original carriage used to be. We finished by taking the fantastic step back in time... More
