The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

My partner and I visited Crumlin Road Gaol on the 17th Feb and we were both very impressed with its history and facilities. Reminded us both of Shawshank prison! Our tour guide was Iain who spoke clearly and was able to answer every question the audience threw at him. We enjoyed listening to him talk about the prisons development from... More

We did the crumlin gaol tour over half term. Fantastic tour guide (Harry) who was informative and fun. The tour was a great insight into the history of the gaol and was enjoyed by all our group. Would highly recommend the on site restaurant, cuffs. Really worth doing when in Belfast.

We visited the gaol after completing the Black taxi tour. We were not disappointed. The guide was both informative and good humoured. We saw where the prisoners were taken across to the Law Courts, were they were kept in their cells, where they ate and exercised. The most poignant aspect of this trip was the execution chamber. Quite chilling!

The tour was very interesting and informative. Had been wanting to do this for a while now and it did not disappoint. The tour guide provided plenty of information and was able to answer all questions posted to him and was a good laugh. It wasn't expensive either at £9 each. Seeing the execution room was very daunting but interesting.... More

Really enjoyed the tour. Buildings are beautiful in one context but daunting in another. Be sure to wear warm clothing if going when its cold outside. Best moment on the tour was the awkwardness of the tour guide when asked by an obviously oblivious tourist "and why did the escapee be pardoned" The execution chamber will hit home and parents... Returning back to 'Norn Iron' with friends and this was top of my list to visit. Spooky and macabre and really good value at £6.50 when we showed our bus tour tickets. .

Very informative and very surprising that the jail was still being used during the 1990's, shame some of the buildings and out building have been demolished. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the whole experience fun. Would recommend this to everyone although is a bit of a walk from the city centre.
