About
Situated in the South Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath, the Hare and Hounds has been around since 1820, but has stood in its present form since 1907. This, along with the beautiful and unique Art Nouveau tiles that line the entry hall and staircase, is a major contributing factor to its current Grade II listed status. Although playing host to local Birmingham legends UB4O's first ever gig in 1979 (recently commemorated by a PRS Music Heritage award and plaque), it is only in the past 7 years that it's really established itself as one of the most important and influential music venues in the country, playing a vital part in nurturing the city's vibrant music and creative community. The venue boasts two downstairs bars which host regular food evenings & a pub quiz whilst the two upstairs venues feature live music & club nights spanning jazz, indie, funk, reggae, hip hop, soul, house, D'n'B & comedy most nights of the week.

Amazing Customer Service
Feb 2020
I attended this pub as a live music venue with my 14 year old son who is autistic. I emailed the venue on the day to ask if they had any assistance in place and received a reply immediatley. On arrival at the venue the manager met us and provided us with all the help we needed.
Lovely venue for live music.
Only negative - the toilets. Doors didn't close propely and are very tired.

Absolutely banging night with LTJ Bukham
Jun 2019
Took my husband here as a birthday treat to see his idle LTJ Bukham and what an awesome night. The staff were brilliant and friendly and the atmosphere was great. So many friendly people no one was rude or caused trouble it was a great night and highly recommend.

All bands were fab, first time we have visted Hare & Hounds / Kings Heath venue for a gig, the actual pub is a very nice place, the venue room is a small intimate place, fab atmosphere, only downside stage is far to low you cant see any of the bands you've paid to see, even when standing on the step of the seated area your only able to see heads and shoulders of band members, stage is like its in a ditch, stage needs to be raised at least 2-3ft higher, then yes would be a fab venue.

Excellent performing arts venue.

I visited this venue as I shall be touring a theatrical event there in September and wanted to see it in action. The Hare and hounds has a great atmosphere and although busy has a great deal of space so i never felt crushed. The upstairs studio spaces are excellent venues and I am looking forward to working there in the autumn. Methyl Ethel who I watched are an outstanding young Australian band. A great evening.

Dreadful Staff - Bunch of absolute snowfakes.
Feb 2019 • Solo
I have been going to this place for over 30 years. After being abroad for a while I popped in to have a pint of Guinness. The staff seem to be on lithium and show no sense of enthusiasm for you as a customer - finding it difficult to go through the motions of common curtesy. This is hard to take when you new this place as a vibrant smiley place. The prices are also well over the top for the offering - this is not cool London it’s Kings Heath. I would advise anyone to avoid this pretensious little redoubt at all cost - unless you want to pay through the nose to be treated like pleb. Check out the Plough in Harborne - service with a smile and chilled out vibe.

Hi Bournville777, Thanks for your feedback. If the staff were not as enthusiastic as you'd hoped then that is a genuine complaint that we'll look into. In their defence though, two new staff were training last night so you may have encountered nerves from their first shift rather than the lack of common courtesy. The prices are in line with other good quality independent pubs and music venues (try Prince Of Wales, Dark Horse or any music venue in the city for comparison) but may we suggest the Wetherspoons or The Old Court (previously The Goose) for a cheaper alternative in KH. The Plough is indeed a wonderful place but as you have complained about our prices, that may also be a little out of your comfort zone as the average drink is considerably more expensive than the H&H. PS Spellcheck is advised for online review posting ;)

Queen DJ Night - A right old knees up with some top quality shapes being thrown
Feb 2019 • Friends
Last weekend I spent a considerable amount of time on the dance floor throwing some awesome shapes to a completely brilliant Queen DJ set. The crowd were really going for it, lots of singing along, loads of amazing dancing and for 3 hours straight we jumped around like teenagers to my favourite band's music and some old school 70's classics - we nearly lost our sh!t when Africa by Toto came on.

It was completely brilliant. Despite the DJ having questionable mixing skills (although, the nature of the music doesn't lend itself easily to impeccable beat matching so you cant blame him) and you cant blame the venue for that ;)

It's a shame the ladies that wrote reviews on here didn't get the memo about it being a DJ night, it was written all over the ad for the evening so thats a bit unfair on the Hare to be honest. I think if I was expecting to see a tribute act I'd have been a bit disappointed too, but then I had read the advert so my expectations were met when I arrived...

In any case, it's an ace pub, with brilliant live music. and I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Queen Night Great fun !!
Feb 2019 • Friends
Unlike the last two reviewers i had actually read the flyer which clearly states this was not going to be a tribute band.We had a great time again at this brilliant venue and had they stayed long enough would have watched a packed venue singing along with every track..The alcohol was 100% genuine as my headache this morning will attest and if they are unfamiliar with plastic glasses at a late night venue i would suggest they have not been out much after midnight in the last decade.I have had many fabulous nights at this well run venue in the past and expect many more into the future..

Queen night rip off - avoid venue like the plague
Feb 2019 • Friends
Went for the Queen night expecting a tribute band after paying £9 for a ticket. No band, just a DJ playing everything but Queen, unless you wanted to wait until after midnight. Room very small, floor covered in drink, long wait at the tiny bar only to be served very over priced wine in a plastic cup. Not impressed at all and I wasn't the only one. A couple of groups had taken parents to watch a tribute band and left within an hour as they were disappointed too. Don't go on the weekend expecting live acts as you won't see one. The whole pub is a right dive, dark, dingy, smells of stale beer, disgusting toilets. Don't bother, there are plenty of better places to go.

Hi Annie, I've copied the event information posted on the promoter and venue's face book page below. Not sure why you would misunderstand what the night was about but more than happy to feed back to the promoter on your behalf? The rest of your review seems to be a little unfair but you're entitled to your opinion and we'll take your comments onboard. 👑 Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?.. 👑 This one's for real Birmingham! We know what you want to hear and our Queen Fanatic Dj's leave no stone unturned, as they play the best of Freddie and the gangs records all night long. Don't stop yourselves now... Get those requests posted on the wall, get on your bicycles and we'll see you Killer Queens Saturday 23rd Feb. ----------------------------------- So what is this... Then? Vice City is a DJ based club night paying homage to the greats from the 70s and 80s. At around midnight, when everyone has just about arrived, we play nothing but the artist that the night is dedicated to, for 90 mins. All the songs you came to hear, on a massive club sound system! 🔈 After that we’ll take you through our all star playlists, with frequent repeats of the themed artist too ;) ----------------------------------- **Please note that this is a club night with DJs not a live band tribute night**
