Overview
More
Hill Close Gardens are a rare example of victorian detached leisure/pleasure gardens. Once used by townsfolk who lived above their businesses and wanted to escape from the crowded town centre. Owners and tenants came here after work or on Sundays to tend their flowers, fruit and vegetables or to relax. These gardens have been fully restored to their original charm and boasts a visitor centre that can be hired out and is used as a tearoom on weekends and bank holidays through the summer months. The gardens are open all year during weekdays. Plant / produce / gift sales. Special events are put on throughout the year.

Very nice way to spend a couple of hours. We punched in the SATNAV given on their website and ended up in some new buildings not far away. Follow the signs for racecourse, and go just inside the racecourse first entrance gate. Then turn right...More

We both like gardens and are interested in social history so found our visit here very rewarding. I liken it to owning a beach hut nowadays....a bit of one upmanship really. But you can easily imagine the benefits for the owners and their excitement when...More

As allotment people really look forward to these gardens and they are great. Victorian gardens renovated over a number of years. Listed summer house. Lots of Apple and pear trees lovely flowers and a warm welcome on arrival. Shame it rained at the end.

Reminded me of visiting my grandparents garden all those years ago. Old blue brick edging to the well tended borders, flowers and thriving allotment crops, amazing restored small summerhouses that you just want to sit in forever. It really is a fascinating glimpse on how...More

Thank goodness this was saved from the bulldozers and lovingly restored by local volunteers - and what a job they have done! The remaining Victorian gardens have been nursed back to their former splendour and listed summerhouses restored to former glory. We visited in July...More

I have been a couple of times to Hill Close Gardens they are a wonderful place to see how people used to live and the plants they used to grow. It is a great place to visit if you are in the area!

Tucked away between the centre of town and the racecourse, this gem is both a quiet garden retreat and one of the last surviving examples of the Victorian Garden. You don't have to be any good with gardening to appreciate the work and talent that...More
