Overview
More
Hill Close Gardens are a rare example of victorian detached leisure/pleasure gardens. Once used by townsfolk who lived above their businesses and wanted to escape from the crowded town centre. Owners and tenants came here after work or on Sundays to tend their flowers, fruit and vegetables or to relax. These gardens have been fully restored to their original charm and boasts a visitor centre that can be hired out and is used as a tearoom on weekends and bank holidays through the summer months. The gardens are open all year during weekdays. Plant / produce / gift sales. Special events are put on throughout the year.

The gardens have a fascinating history as they are rare survivors of Victorian detached gardens where the middle classes grew flowers, fruit and vegitables as theit own homes had little garden (many were retailers or merchants). The layout remains much the same today but they...More

A friendly and informative welcome before exploring these set of gardens. The cafe is open on weekends throughout the summer but they offer hot & cold drinks during the week along with small snacks. This suited us and we found a nice secluded seat in...More

We both like gardens and are interested in social history so found our visit here very rewarding. I liken it to owning a beach hut nowadays....a bit of one upmanship really. But you can easily imagine the benefits for the owners and their excitement when...More
