Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s very good but a bit mixed. The Neapolitan paintings did very little for me: they are daubs for aristocratic tourists. The North European stuff by contrast is magnificent and while the Chinese bowls etc don’t do much for me, it is an important and valuable collection. Best of all is the folk art, especially the paintings. Loved them. There are also some great portraits from the National Collection, including an intriguing Julie Walters. The worst part by far is the rubbish by David Batchelor. He likes colours so produces blobs of yellow and blue in case the rest of us have forgotten what they look like. Just boring. So all in all pretty good with some fantastic highlights as well as pretentious dross.

This is a stunning surprise. We went for one of the exhibitions but found the whole house, and it’s history, fascinating. Lovely big light exhibition spaces, helpful staff.

Loved this. And it was richly enhanced by staff member Pam’s well-informed and lively talk/guidance of the exhibition.

This privately or charitably owned Palladian mansion is surrounded by glorious grounds, has several absolutely world-class exhibitions at any time and even has a great restaurant. Spend the day here, even if it isn’t a budget option, because it is worth it. Utterly fabulous. I can’t speak too highly of it. Room guides are knowledgeable and helpful. The range of art is huge here.

The capability Brown park is a lovely place for a walk and the house contains an eclectic mix of art and artefacts - something for everyone to enjoy or wonder at in equal measure! The collection of folk art might not be to everybody’s taste but it’s great to see this recognised and displayed.
The cafe, however, is run by some friendly people but is an utter shambles. For a reason that escapes me (and the owners apparently) it is run on table service with an extensive menu when neither front nor back of house have the resources or capability to do so! 60 minutes to get 6 drinks, a tuna melt, chips and two cakes!!! And if I hadn’t chased our order I’m pretty sure we’d still be there. And no they were not that busy. Learn from other similar tourist attractions. Keep it simple and self service as much as possible. And for pity’s sake get a process, it’s not that difficult!

Lovely grounds and gallery which we loved visiting with our yearly pass but unfortunately they have got greedy and very expensive £75 to visit one property when you can visit hundreds of national trusts sites for the same amount. Have stopped the local passes and doubled the price. Bare in mind you have to pay extra for special events and extra for some exhibitions. Sadly we won't be renewing.

Delightful grounds, snooty Restaurant Manager, overpriced and dreadful coffee from the ‘Pods’ in the park. Could be so much better but not.

What a beautiful venue. Loved the gardens. Loved the setting. The only very disappointing experience was the badly run cafe. Chaotic would be an understatement. Lots of staff milling about with seemingly no one in charge to organise them. People waiting to be seated, no separate queue for takeaways, incorrect order brought to our table, order lost when we wanted to pay. This cafe desperately needs good manager.

Excellent exhibition (#PAOTY); super friendly, helpful staff; lovely venue; great food and service.
A very lovely, relaxed day, and warm, helpful service despite the cafe struggling with a wedding and a staff shortage. A nice range of good food from yea/coffee/cake right through to a full, classy lunch.
Everything is well laid out, clean, clearly signposted.
We will definitely be back. Thank you - especially to the lively lady in the cafe (who had lost her voice!)

The Portrait exhibition was excellent, but a bit overcrowded. Not having timed tickets is a double edged sword. It also meant that there was a bulge in arrivals at the restaurant and that proved a challenge for the staff. However, the hardest working in the place, Lulu, was terrific and held things together almost single handedly. Fixing problems with charm and effectiveness is her top skill. The food was pretty good for this type of place though a bit pricey. £16 for a burger is a trifle excessive.
The Northern Europe exhibition was very good but we weren’t overwhelmed by the Naples exhibition.
The weather wasn’t very kind so we didn’t linger for long in the beautiful grounds - Capability Brown at his best.

How do I get there if I don't have a car and don't have £60 to pay for a taxi to and from the nearest station? And please don't say 'bus', as the first bus gets there at 11.03 and the last bus leaves at 13.47.
I'm afraid to say that currently this bus service is the only option. In the past City Sightseeing did run a bus to Compton Verney from Stratford but regrettably despite our combined efforts to promote the service, it was not used enough to make it feasible for them to continue to run it. We know that some visitors come as a group with family and friends so that they can share the taxi costs which makes it a more affordable day for everyone.
