Again, another excellent site if you are interested in Roman history. This site is an ongoing archaeological dig as well as being open the public. Good museum, pleasant cafe, a reconstruction of part of an old fort/tower.

Great site to visit, would recommend doing in conjunction with the Roman army museum (they sell joint tickets) we did the museum first to prepare us for vindolanda, which I would suggest is useful to give you an idea of what you are looking at. The site is great and reminds me of a (much smaller!) UK version of Pompeii... More

This a very nice site. The town/fort itself are nicely restored, with more excavations underway. There is a very good comparison of the different wall types over time. A short walk away, there is a very good (and quite extensive) museum and tea shop. Buying a pass into Vindolanda also provides an entrance in the "Roman Army Museum." This museum... More

The extensive ruins of the Roman fortress and vicus are being excavated during the summers, so the exhibits in the museum are developing. I was amazed by the amount of leather shoes, etc, and the wooden tablets. Such delicate things that have survived almost 2 thousand years.

i was looking forward to the visit and had a fantastic time. Firstly the site is big and well managed, lots to see and learn about and the Museum on site was small but great and an absolute treasure trove of artefacts found, pottery, coins and loads of well preserved shoes. Next the facilities were good, information done well without... More

This museum and archaeological site is fantastic. There are things in the museum you just cannot see anywhere else in the world because of the extraordinary anaerobic conditions in the ground. I thought the highlight would be the tablets, and while these are unmissable it is the other artefacts which are captivating. The level of preservation is incredible, there is... More

Very interesting and informative. Staff were friendly and helpful and exhibits in museum were well displayed and easy to understand. All of the things in the museum were found on the site and give a really in depth understanding of how life was lived 2000 years ago. The kids enjoyed this as well in particular the reconstruction of Hadrian's wall.... More
