No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

A nice walk around York. Some of it is unprotected so not good for young children. Nice to pass the time though and gives an indication of how people used to live!

We enjoyed the wall but we had to carry the stroller up and down some flights of stairs. We had to keep a good eye on our granddaughter but she enjoyed it thoroughly.

We didn't have a chance to do the whole route but will be returning to complete in the future. A mixture of narrow walkways, views of York (and people's gardens!) and a way to navigate the city away from the traffic. Not suitable for wheelchair...More

Be sure when climbing the stairs you try pushing the gates open or you may think the entrances are closed. Walking the walls gives a good elevated view of the city and views of excellent gardens.

These walls are a good walk but wear good shoes as most of the walls don't have a barrier or rail inside and it's quite high up but the ground below is solid under foot. This will give you fabulous views as you walk around...More

A great way of finding out more of the history and secrets of the city. Some splendid houses and gardens viewed from sections of the wall.

We never got the feeling like we could fall. There are high walls or fences and solid footing. If it's just being high, I think 20-30 feet at the most is it.

I am a tourist, and so cannot answer your question but York is a highly organised destination and so would be suprised if a German speaking tour was not available
