No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

If you are limited for time then walk the section from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar with the view of the Minster and the Archbishops house. If you have the time walk all the walls - well worth it.

We have just completed our annual visit to York including our walk around the walls. Takes about an hour and a half excellent views of the city and living history walking in the footsteps of the Romans. Well worth the effort

A nice walk on the walls. Would have liked to have completed all of it but we were short of time and it was very cold, maybe next time. Lovely view of the Minster in the distance, good photo opportunity.

We didn't walk the entire wall, instead we did parts of it by getting on and off over the course of a few days in York. Definitely worth doing, and obviously a must. Good views and very interesting.

Very nice walls, you can walk on them and circle the city centre. I really enjoyed the view and the experience, it's nothing transcendental but still very nice and it's not something you can do everywhere, so I advise to do it if you come...More

Annual trail of around 25+ ice sculptures sponsored by local businesses all around the city. Spectacular carvings encapsulating objects from the sponsor, including diamond rings! Well worth a visit despite the cold weather.

Interesting walk on these historic walls although couldn't walk all around due to some closure points. Good views of the city and a quiet walk to the town avoiding some traffic noise.

I remember visiting York some years ago and part of the highlight was walking the walls. Tried to do it last weekend and kept being stopped by locked gates. We even followed the wall from below for some distance to try and find a way...More

Great way to see the city. The walls are not completely intact but there is enough left standing to pretty much get around the city. Well worth a visit.

We never got the feeling like we could fall. There are high walls or fences and solid footing. If it's just being high, I think 20-30 feet at the most is it.

I am a tourist, and so cannot answer your question but York is a highly organised destination and so would be suprised if a German speaking tour was not available
