Nestled under numerous overpasses, train bridges and between very busy streets, this is a worthwhile visit during your tour of London. There are numerous vendors for all sorts of breads, cheeses, meats, pastries, coffees, to go food, etc. We enjoyed a nice breakfast here assembled from a few vendors on one of the provided picnic tables. It is a great... More

Walked through the market for what must be the thousandth time or many more in a lifetime of working in and around the City. Never fails to impress for its ornate ironwork and its amazing history, which is well illustrated with some good display panels. It is of course a working environment, at least until mid-morning, but that only adds... More

Smithfields is the central London meat market, still working. It's also the hub for many years of history, great eateries and bars.

It was my 4th visit last week, and it just gets better. This is because I have got to know where to buy what I want, I have a few favourite traders and have learnt a few rules. #1 Know what you want #2,walk up and down the entire length before buying anything. #3 Ask prices per KG - and... More

You'll need a guide or some pre-reading to appreciate the history of this wonderful area inside Old London's "Square Mile". There's no action at Smithfields during the day except for some historical photos & info but before dawn it works as it's worked pretty much for eight centuries taking in the great flow of beasts and fowl for London's wholesale... Having visited three other markets in the same weekend - this one was a bit disappointing. It doesn't have the traditional feel of say, Brick Lane or Portobello. The market building is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Prices seemed a little steep for a market but we did find some excellent T-shirts for £12. If... More

Firstly go here very early in the morning. I recommend before 6 am. By 8 am you have missed everything but the building. The market is a crazy, wonderful, odd combination of people, sights, sounds and the overpowering smell of meat. Not really a place for vegetarians but if you want to see a little slice of East end history... More

I expected to see more activity. Granted, we were there on the late side--6 am; an arrival closer to 4 am might have been more interesting. In terms of what you'll see, lots and lots of cases with wide range of british meats and a few cheeses.

We had a tour around the market. It is a fascinating old building steeped in history. The meat on sale is amazing we weren't going straight home or I would have bought dinner.

Staying in Clerkenwell

Neighbourhood Profile
Owing to its proximity to Smithfield Market – the site of an ancient meat market which remains in operation today – Clerkenwell boasts a plethora of globally renowned restaurants, fabulous local eateries, and some of London's favorite pubs. This isn't merely a focal point for all things foodie though. Spend enough time wondering through the area's maze of streets and you might become accustomed to the litany of slinky models passing between Clerkenwell's handful of fashion houses. Far outnumbering the models are craftspeople and designers, many of them are more than happy to welcome visitors into their studios and showrooms.
