Polka Theatre is one of the few venues in the UK which is dedicated to producing and presenting world-class theatre for children aged 0 - 13 years. Since the doors opened in 1979, this unique venue has been entertaining children with resonant, engaging and exciting theatre.Over 100,000 children a year come to Polka and are inspired, stimulated and engaged by theatre, often for the first time. Polka strives to stir the emotions, spark the imagination and, most of all, entertain. Its two theatre spaces, the Main Theatre and the Adventure Theatre are designed especially for children so that their first taste of theatre is welcoming and relevant. It’s also a free resource, where local families can ‘pop in to play’ - to explore our exhibition areas, dressing-up and reading corners, our playground, garden and cafe.

About ten years ago I took a grandchild to the Polka and I was really disappointed in the show and thought it was amateur and boring. On Wednesday I took another grandchild to Babe and we were thrilled with it. A really happy afternoon with some great acting,,superb direction and good music. I hope it will be a lovely childhood... I have been coming to this theatre since I was two and it always has the same calm and inviting ethos that makes it an amazing place to visit. I did a workshop which was really fun and educational. I always love this theatre!

We went to see the "Chester tuffnut" play at the adventure theatre and it was a great moment! Educational, entertaining and... making children aware on our environment! Very nice welcoming staff and good actors for children. To recommend! We ll come back! PS: recommended with Seniors with..their grandchildren. Also, the toys, gardens and the healthy non expensive café are definitely... More

Being a primary school teacher, it was ideal to have a cohort of young children come see James & the Giant Peach before the summer holidays. The actors & actresses thoroughly involve the audience through interactions, playing characters & responses. The show was very creative & most enjoyable! The staff were friendly & helpful with us, especially as we led... More

My older son (5 years) and husband watched the fantastic production of James and the Giant Peach while my daughter (3 years) and I saw Chester Tuffnut for under 5s. Both fabulous productions! Loved the outdoor play area, extremely helpful and friendly staff and creative activities for children (pretend play trunk with costumes, the interactive bus in the foyer etc).... More

My children are 11 and 9, and somehow today was our first visit! Not sure why we haven't been before! We saw 'James and the Giant Peach' which was absolutely first class in its acting and staging! I won't spoil surprises for anyone reading by describing it, but I can confirm that it is ideal entertainment for older children and... More

My children were entranced by both the show and the venue, especially the dressing up and rocking horses in the foyer, and the wendy house in the garden. There is an unpretentious cafe with a well thought out and reasonably priced menu suitable for kids and adults. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.
