The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) is Sir Christopher Wren's twin-domed riverside masterpiece and one of London's most popular attractions. The iconic buildings stand on the site of Greenwich Palace, Henry VIII's favourite royal residence, and were originally designed as a refuge for old and injured sailors. The buildings and grounds are open daily and include the Painted Hall, Chapel and Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre. Admission is free.

Well organised, lasts an hour which is just right for what you see. Yes, there are steps but fairly easy and once up a solid flat floor. Everyone has a headset to hear your own guide, which means you don't get interrupted by other tours, and enables you to walk around and still hear what is being said. Very well... More

An amazing opportunity to view this magnificent painted ceiling up close! The scaffolding itself is an unbelievable structure and very easy steps to climb up. A very informative guide gave us an excellent tour with ample opportunities for questions and our own viewing time. I can't wait to go back again in a few months to see how work is... More

I highly recommend this fantastic opportunity to ascend to within a few inches of Thornhill's amazing painted ceiling. The steps are easy to climb, the guide is very informative and the headset you get means you can hear every word he says. When the conservation work is completed it is expected to last 100 years, so there will not be... More

Many thanks for your recommendation Jill! As you say, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so we recommend that people come when they can over the next year. Tickets are available at the door however we recommend that people book ahead to secure their places. More

My Wife and I visited Greenwich in early April and one of the places we have always wanted to visit is the Old Royal Naval College and we are really glad we did. The Site was easy to find from the nearest Dockland Light Transport station which is Greenwich Cutty Sark but it is well served by various modes of... More

I studied at the University of Greenwich many years ago, so have a close connection (and great memories!) of the Old Royal Naval College including the Painted Hall, so when I heard about the ceiling tour that was taking place during the restoration work, I knew I couldn't miss out! I cannot recommend this tour highly enough - it's a... More

I have been to see this beautiful paintings quite a few times, each time I feel amazed. There are also mirrors from which the details of the paintings can be seen. A must see.

The painted hall is stunning at the best of times but although a lot is covered up because of the refurbishment work, this is a brilliant opportunity to see the murals really close up as well as have a guided tour of some of the highlights of the work. It is an unforgettable experience. And remember the area of the... More

We thoroughly enjoyed the Painted Hall Tour yesterday afternoon. Such a unique experience to view the ceiling literally just above our heads. Patrick was our guide - very enthusiastic and so knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour. We now feel we want to come back and see it again - plus would love to view it close up when... More

Staying in Greenwich

Neighbourhood Profile
Greenwich
Greenwich Mean Time starts here, so to speak, as the very concept of global time was established at Royal Observatory, just one of several buildings of architectural interest in Greenwich. Indeed, the whole of Greenwich's historic town center, its Royal Park and a number of related buildings (and one world famous ship, the Cutty Sark) make up the UNESCO World Heritage site known as Maritime Greenwich. Today a laser beam is shot out across the night sky from the Observatory to mark the location of the Prime Meridian. Other bold (some say brash) 21st century additions to the area include landmarks such as The O2 entertainment complex (previously known as the Millennium Dome) and the Air Line cable cars, which offer scenic transport across the Thames between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks.
