Southbank Centre is a world-famous arts centre on the South Bank of the Thames. Our origins are in the 1951 Festival of Britain when our largest venue The Royal festival Hall was built. Southbank Centre has now grown to occupy a 21-acre site in the midst of London's vibrant cultural quarter and as well as Royal Festival Hall our venues include Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room for performance based arts and Hayward Gallery which is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest art galleries. Southbank Centre is also home to The Poetry Library in Royal Festival Hall, a popular Roof Garden created by The Eden Project, Jubilee Gardens which is the area in front of the London Eye and a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, markets and shops can also be found on our site. Southbank Centre draws on its Festival of Britain heritage to present Festivals For The World. Throughout the year a vibrant programme of themed arts activities takes place both inside and outside our buildings. We offer a very wide range of cultural events from the greatest classical music to performances by contemporary music acts. From dance to performance and spoken word events. 50% of our programme is free so not only do we offer events for all tastes, we offer activities for all pockets too. Whatever you choose to do at Southbank Centre today, we look forward to welcoming you.

I love going there. The conference are always interesting, free, well organized and mind opening. They manage to link it to great shows. I can't praise them enough to make culture and arts accessible.

Things didn't get off to a great start when we lost 15 minutes trying to find the right entrance to the actual exhibition, to start with: unless you are savvy with the venue and the RFH take heed. Upon collecting tickets, the unsmiling assistant asked for my ref number and when I offered to show it, was ticked off that... More

Always pop in here when visiting London with the children, they love the ballroom area where they can run around and have fun whilst we have a bite to eat from the cafe. We saw the Moomin show and everyone enjoyed in.

This is a multi use building with many different areas including a great shop that sells items that are classic and very arty that relate to the building and london as a whole Well worth a visit to here which has great views onto the Thames

We visited the Southbank Centre to see the Tove Jansson exhibition and I must say I was very impressed! It was obviously geared towards children as it was an interactive exhibit, but that didn't mean adults couldn't enjoy it too. They had had a technical difficulty so the tours were delayed, and we explained to the staff that we weren't... More

As adult Moomin fans we were (possibly?) a little older than the intended visitors, it was well presented, almost magical, with fascinating original drawings and pictures displayed in theatrical settings from the books. I also learnt more about Moonins I didn't know before..delighted with the experience

We went to the Moominland exhibition and wow! It was truly immersive with different areas reflecting different parts of the books. The guide told us a lot of information about Tove Jansson as well as the characters she created. An excellent way to spend an hour. I hope to return before the exhibition finishes.

Arrived with printed tickets which designate row and seat number. Unfortunately all the signs indicate only colours and door letters, none of which information is on the tickets. That is a level of incompetence barely believable for a major venue such as this. However, obliging ushers deal with it all, apologizing for the admin failure. Once inside the large hall... More

Very good fun for all ages both young and old though a bit of sitting on the floor and crouching down and some unsteady areas. The only downside was sometimes the narrator would move on to the next room and you felt rushed to have a look at all the art work before you missed what she was saying in... More

Staying in Southbank

Neighbourhood Profile
Southbank
Big time attractions such as the London Eye and a thriving theatre scene (compliments of the National Theatre and the Young Vic) are but a few of the reasons that Southbank is such a collectively cherished part of town. With plenty of family friendly activities and venues lined up along a pedestrianized river bank between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge, visitors can always expect a casual and festive atmosphere. On top of all the fun stuff to do at Southbank is the opportunity to simply sit back and admire photo-op views of iconic landmarks like Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral, just on across the Thames.
