We don’t often take tours but this one added to what we would have got out of a self guided amble round the cemetery. Martin, our guide, was well informed and seemed to be enjoying showing us round. He was happy to point me towards a grave I was interested in that isn’t on the standard tour. Be aware the tour is of the West side of the cemetery, Karl Marx, Douglas Adams and other interesting people are buried on the other side of the road. The tour ticket covers both areas.

If you go to Highgate, the guided tour is of the West (older) cemetery, but the admission price includes a self guided tour of the east cemetery. Allow at least two hours for that. My tour of the West cemetery (about 1hr 30) was by a guide called Martin. A brilliant guide - enthusiastic, witty, and very knowledgeable. Well worth the money.

My wife booked this as a surprise. We took the tour of the west side and wandered around in the east. It is best known for the grave of Karl Marx but is so much more and stepped in history. The guide, Julia, was very knowledgeable and made it fascinating! Wholly recommend!!

We had an amazing experience with our guided tour of the West Cemetery. We were accompanying A Level Literature students studying the gothic texts Dracula and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Not only is the cemetery stunning, the whole experience was enhanced by our guide, Corinna Goldsmith, who was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable, full of information about the Victorian era, the design and history of the cemetery, and gave us a real socio-historical understanding of the reality behind Victorian sensibilities towards death. She also perfectly tailored her talk towards bringing alive the gothic texts' settings and the inspirations behind the authors' writing, and broadened the Gothic LIterature theme to include Frankenstein and other renowned gothic writers. There were nuggets of Victorian curiosity as well that made the whole experience fascinating. We will definitely be rebooking this tour, and hope to get Corinna to guide us again.

An absorbing and atmospheric experience. The cemetery itself is stunningly beautiful, with a wealth of architectural detail - I knew relatively little about the cemetery, so the Egyptian avenue & catacombs were a delightful surprise. The guided tour adds so much to the experience - our guide Stephen Overton was informative & charming in equal measure, and his passion for the place was evident - if you do the tour, don't be afraid to ask questions, as there is a wealth of wonderful detail behind the monuments.

Back to Highgate, a few years later. The day was promising, drizzle, a grey sky, on a sleepy Saturday morning in November. The employees, all volunteers, always impeccable, and so I joined a last-minute group with Stephen.
Highgate is always worth a visit, not only for lovers of the genre, but because it is a window on Victorian London in the early 19th century, through the narration and observation of the tombs that make a fine show after so much time: the vegetation has partly covered some of them with leaves and now with the beautiful winter foliage. Each grave has a different story unfolding before our eyes: bankers, wealthy merchants but also boxers, circus owners, song and opera stars. The air is dark but not ghostly and Stephen tells us about the lives that were as if he had known the tomb owners personally.
As the rain becomes more persistent, we tiptoe out of the cemetery silently, Amen!!

A wonderful tour, professional, interesting, enlightening and entertaining - even for my 18-year-old daughter who, well, is an 18-year-old! Martin was so knowledgeable and managed to transport us in time, with fascinating examples and humour. This is a really atmospheric place - great for a brief introduction into 19th century London and also for anyone with an interest in history, sociology, biology even geology. A really unusual venue which I strongly recommend! Thank you Martin.

The cemetery is very atmospheric and beautiful, with plenty interesting graves and sculptures. Me and my friend booked a guided tour which I highly recommend, our tour guide was brilliant, so passionate and knowledgeable (I think his name was Richard, a gentleman with very long hair) and we would have missed so many fascinating details if we were just walking around. There are some less and better known celebrities and famous people buried there, including George Michael.

We booked the guided tour of the Highgate’s West Gate cemetery. It is a truly fascinating place and the tour was fantastic! We learned so much information regarding the cemetery, its occupants and the history of the place from our tour guide, Stephen, who was just exceptional. It also happened to be Halloween weekend and the place was wonderfully atmospheric. We particularly enjoyed Egyptian Avenue and the catacombs. We would highly recommend visiting Highgate cemetery - a true highlight of London.
