    Atmospheric and interesting.
Atmospheric wilderness of a old Victorian cemetery with crypts aplenty. Excellent tour guide who really brought the stories to life, with a nice dry humour. The cemetery was really interesting and the tour and the guidebook were well worth a small extra expense.

Wonderful place with loads of history
What a wonderful tour of the West cemetery. My husband and i were on a tour guided by Julia. Pardon the pun but she brought the deceased alive by telling about their lives and delivered with great humour. A truly magical place with very interesting ' residents '. Well worth a visit ...highly recommend. If you havent already visited ...why not and if you have ..worth another visit.

    Interesting and poignant
We took part in a guided tour from Michelle. She made the experience extremely interesting and was an excellent guide. Very informative and made the whole trip really interesting. We went inside the catacombs which was very eerie and enhanced the whole trip. I would definitely recommend this to do whilst visiting London. It was excellent value for money and a very peaceful place to visit.

    Amazing and thought provoking
Wow, wow and wow, the stonemasonry and the sheer variations of monuments. Old and new money mixed and crammed side by side. Huge vaults, mausoleums and overall design but mostly the realisation that whatever you have in life, other than a gorgeous memorial , we are all the same in death..Absolutely beautiful if that is a word you can use for a cemetery...stonemasonry and cemetery design at its best whilst the money and space lasts that is..absolutely worth a visit..amazing what was achieved so long ago..just think..how did they get those 8 tonne memorials up a steep hill, no roads or paths..and many are still as good as new..

    Brilliant tour
We joined the tour which gave us access to the catacombs which was amazing. The cemetery is well maintained and the wild flowers and trees made it a very pretty walk around. Our tour guide John kept the tour interesting and informative. He was happy to answer questions of our group and was very witty. Highly recommend and will most definitely be back .

    Intriguing, historical and photogenic
This is a fascinating and intriguing place to spend time. We took the best part of a day to visit the east and west sections. We enjoyed tracking down the final resting places of many well-known and historic figures. Michael Faraday, Karl Marx (old and new graves), Lucien Freud, Sidney Nolan, and others. Our favourite area was the circle of mausoleums known as the Circle of Lebanon. We would highly recommend a long visit to this cemetery.

    Well worth the visit!
Well worth the journey and price and we were lucky to get such a lovely day! Our guide Peter was excellent, very knowledgeable and clearly enjoys the job. It was a great overview of the origins for the cemetery, heard about its most famous residents as well as the lesser known, every day people. Have already been recommending to friends and family!

    Fascinating visit.
Having lived in London for years,I finally got around to booking a guided tour of HC with my friend as we were coming to Highgate. It was well worth it - our volunteer tour guide John was an encyclopedia of knowledge of the cemetery's history, spaces and tales. He also welcomed lots of questions, which was great. The visit to the catacombs was a (macabre) extra! I will definitely visit again as the cemetery is such a calm, beautiful place to walk around. Highly recommended.

    In death there is beauty
I’ve never thought about walking around a cemetery before, just isn’t a thing you do usually. This cemetery though is London’s highest rated cemetery and it did have a certain beauty to it. The gravestones are all different and unique, there’s a lot of history here and a lot of art in the tombstones. As I walked along with my friends, I thought, how glad I was to be alive in this moment.

It was a good idea to revisit the cemetery but this time with a tour. The commentary explores the grave of some peculiar characters of the old London history and tales which makes it very entertaining. Very well delivered by knowledgeable volunteers.

Recently did the guided highlights tour. The guide was superb, he had so much information about the history of the cemetery and various graves. We also went into the catacombs which you can only do on the tour.

It was the highlights tour which covers the west part of the cemetery. Some of it really hit home as well especially the poor unmarked graves of people. This is a must do tour.

The tour was brilliant. Our tour guide (Julia) was informative, funny and enthusiastic. The tour was well worth the price, particularly considering that it helps to maintain such an amazing place. We saw all of the highlights and learned so much. We've already recommended it to family and friends.

I first visited Highgate in October 2023 and it left a lasting impression on me. So when I was back in London in April 2024, I had to go back.

Both times I paid for the guided tour. The first time we had one of the Peters (I can't remember which one!) and the second one time we had Lily. Both tours were equally as entertaining & I was pleased to find out that they weren't just 'copy & pasted' tours - you really do get a different experience depending on which guide you get!

Even reluctant family members who I 'dragged' along said that it was so much better than they had expected (I suppose not everyone likes the idea of going to a graveyard while on holiday!)

The West side is my favourite. It's so rustic and beautifully overgrown with green foliage. It's so lovely to learn about significant figures of the past that would have otherwise have gone forgotten. Visit famous authors, scientists, sportsmen and figures of our history (e.g Alexander Litvinenko). This side is also home to perhaps the most well-kept grave, George Michael. This isn't part of the tour, but is respectfully pointed out for you to visit after (there are always 2 bouquets of fresh white roses which never look even slightly wilted, which is just beautiful)

Allow at least an hour to visit the East side (included entry with your tour ticket), this side is arguably more modern & takes the form of a 'standard' cemetery, but there are loads of interesting headstones & people to learn about. The most famous being Karl Marx. We visited in early April and this side had blooms of bluebells and a few tulips which really was lovely.

If you've visited London a few times & want to do something a little more unusual, then I would 110% recommend Highgate Cemetery. It truly is a special place. It's worth doing the £18 guided tour (definitely pre-book online) as you learn so much & get full rein of both sides before / after.

Tip: Get the tube to Archway & then hop on the bus up the hill. It's a constant steady incline which is quite tiring. We hopped on the 143 bus to Bisham Gardens but you can also get the 210 bus. Hop off at the top of the hill & you'll have a nice stroll through the park before getting to Highgate. Save your walking energy for the cemetery itself!

Having lived in London for nearly 49 years, I have always intended to visit Highgate Cemetery and finally achieved this today. We were fortunate to enjoy a warm, sunny, spring day, so it was dry underfoot and the West Cemetery was like visiting a secret woodland garden/wilderness. I would definitely recommend doing a guided tour, as this provides much more information than the free map and also includes access to the catacombs. Julie Johnson was an excellent guide - very knowledgeable with a sense of humour. No doubt there are interesting stories about some of the other graves, but many are inaccessible...but that is part of the charm and uniqueness of Highgate. The tour highlights some of the most interesting graves and residents. We also did a self guided tour of the East Cemetery, recognising some of the names there. It would probably be interesting to return to the West Cemetery in a different season, to see how this changes the atmosphere. Today it was a quiet, contemplative place, and did not seem over-imposing in the sunshine, despite the density of graves and striking architecture of the Eygptian Avenue.
There are basic toilets on site and a small 'truck' was selling teas/coffee, crisps, bananas and gingerbread outside in the courtyard, but you may wish to take a snack/sandwiches to eat on one of the courtyard seats or in Waterlow Park (which does have a cafe ) if you want to have lunch between visiting each graveyard, otherwise you may need to walk back to Archway or to Highgate for refreshments. Do follow the directions given on the cemetery's website regarding tube/bus routes to Waterlow Park. We did not prebook our tour, which was fortunate as we suffered a one hour delay on train into London due to signal failures. Luckily there were spaces on 12 noon tour when we arrived (Friday 12 April 2024) but 2.00pm was already fully booked. So do keep an eye on availability if hoping to join a tour.

We had a tour of the West side led by Lily. She was very knowledgeable. It was fascinating to hear the stories of people buried there. If you go on a tour, you get to go inside the gated crypt which is interesting to see. We then wandered around both sides of the cemetery ourselves. There is a vast array of different graves, mausoleums, etc. You are not allowed in some areas as it is unsafe to do so. You can see that areas have sunk and are very overgrown. We spent most of a day here. There is a little cafe area and toilet facilities.

Such a fascinating place, packed with history.
The experience made even better by the team of volunteers who are so pleasant and helpful, right from the booking process to our time spent looking around.
We pre - booked the tour of the West Side and arrived with enough time to have a cup of tea by the ticket office.
Our tour guide was Paul, he was brilliant, knowledgeable and amusing. Very mindful of the safety of the group as some of the paths can be uneven and there are steps and slopes to navigate.
My husband uses a walking stick and it was all fine for him, so do not be deterred by the accessibility.
We then spent time wandering around the East Side.
The list of notable graves and a map make it very easy to navigate yourself, I would, however, recommend the purchase of a guide book to supplement the map.
We arrived at 10 am and did not leave until 3 pm!
Even then we did not cover all of the East side.
Thank you to all the volunteers who make it possible for us all to enjoy this space and learn about this piece of important history.
Regards
Paula & Andrew Powell
