What I enjoyed learning about Electric Avenue was that in addition to it's being in a song lyric, the reason for this street's name was that it was one of the first streets in London to get electricity. Being a well-to-do area in the early 1900's, the residents were proud of being early adopters.

Electric Avenue is a great place to visit with quirky market stalls and shops selling ethnic foods. When I visited in June 2016 though their were lots of street works going on but, of course, these won't last forever. There is a great Wetherspoon pub nearby and of course the famous mural of David Bowie is also in the neighbourhood.

The Electric Avenue is located just 2 minutes' walk away from the Brixton Tube Station. Having heard about its former grandeur in late 19th Century when this stretch of street became the first market street to be electrically lit one will expect to see at least a modest street with a neat row of shops lining it. But quite contrary... More

Full of vendors selling all sorts of bric brac and produce. Was expecting something with more character. The Brixton Village market was slightly better. Nothing much to buy shopping wise but the food selection is varied

Legendary road in Brixton. Always lots going on. Be it during the day with the Market or at night with the many pubs, bars, and restaurants nearby.

and that does not necessarily reflect on the street - there are fruit/veg/meat & fish stalls and a bit of trash on the street. But its all part of a lively Brixton village area, which is a place to go!

Electric Avenue is a bit depressing and run down, there's a tiny and popular branch of Greggs, lots of poundshops with household tat piled high and a few decent food shops selling fresh fish, meat and veg. The only bit I really like is the fabric shop on the corner which is much bigger inside than it looks on the... More
