Top ways to experience Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
How to get there

I was never THAT into Shakespeare but growing up with learning about Shakespeare in school, I had to visit the Globe Theatre when in London. I had pre-purchased tickets online and made an 11AM appointment for the tour. We had arrived 20 minutes early (from Borough Market). Had asked for toilet but they said we could join the 1045AM tour as there is openings and we were there already.

It is quite interesting learning about the origination of the theater, layout, past history of how it was used, how its still currently used, etc. Don't want to go into much detail as its something you should experience yourself ! Our tour guide was very informational and answered everyone's questions.

Another aspect of Shakespearean theater learned !

Definitely worth the visit once !

My mum, boyfriend and I really enjoyed the walking guided tour with Gerald (I think his name was?!). He was incredibly warm & friendly. His knowledge of the globe and its history was felt throughout and he added humour were suitable. Would absolutely recommend and I think the price is incredibly reasonable. We would love to visit the theatre for a production next spring or summer!

Very interesting guided tour with a lot of facts about the history of the Globe, about the way theatre was performed in those days, about the construction of the building, about social interaction around 1600 and about the Shakespearean plays performed nowadays. And all that information given *in* the historical surroundings, sitting in the gentlemen's seats, standing as groundlings before the stage, walking around in the theatre and the buildings around it.
Sadly there was no play, but we knew that up front (that's only March-October). Definitely want to come back some day to visit a play!
Easy to reach: nearby Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge, London Bridge tube station.

We were taken round by David, who was an excellent guide. He didn’t talk down to us and was fluent and articulate; really clear speaker who talked to us for almost an hour without any notes, leaving us with the impression that our tour was unique, not just a conveyor belt thing. Although I already knew quite a lot about Shakespeare and the theatre of his time, there was lots here to keep me interested. At the same time, anyone who knew little of the subject would have found David’s talk really interesting and informative.
Well worth our £17 each - excellent value compared to other London tourist attractions.

Unbelievably bad. The acting was marginal at best and I felt like I was watching a disorganized rehearsal. Zero effort in set design and wardrobe. Not at all what I expected as the actors wore casual clothes (khakis, hoodies and sneakers). I actually thought it was a parody for the first several minutes..but alas…. the parody continued for a painful 2 hours and 25 minutes. The best part of this play was when it was over.

We did the Halloween tour on Saturday 29/10/22 and although my daughter was a little old for it I thought Norma who was our guide really included everyone and tried to make all the facts spooky.

My daughter told Norma she was studying 'the scottish play' at school and after our tour she took all of our group back into the theatre and explained more about it.

I will definitely book another guided tour and hope to get Norma again. She really does love the theatre and her job and you can tell.

Booked the tickets as a birthday present for my friend and we were NOT disappointed. As theatre people, hearing about the history of the time period in which some of the greatest playwrights existed was a treat; the people wanted violence, sex and murder!
The circles in which Shakespeare found himself, with the likes of Ben Johnson, Francis Langley and Christopher Marlowe. The mystery, intrigue and dodgy dealings. Mark Rowland was a fantastic guide, his knowledge and humour made the tour even more enjoyable.
I would recommend this to anyone that has a deep love of theatre, Shakespeare and the depravity of Bankside!

The Tour of the Globe was a family present that gave us the opportunity to visit somewhere we had walked passed dozens of times. Our guide Llyr made our trip special. Equipped with headsets that allowed us to clearly hear his live commentary above the hustle and bustle, we were treated to a host of interesting facts on both the Globe's history, it's everyday running and of course Shakespeare. It makes such a difference when someone clearly relishes their job. Highly recommended.

Whether you are a Shakespeare fan or not, the tour is highly recommended. Our guide Janet was lovely, informative and charming. Even managed to convince my friend whom I dragged along to enjoy the tour. Always a pleasure to see employees who live their job. Will definitely return to catch a few plays next season.
