About
The Tower of London is one of the top sights to see in the city right in front of the majestic Tower Bridge. This historic castle with over 1,000 years of history is home to the Crown Jewels, the iconic 'Beefeater' Yeoman Warders, and the legendary ravens that have kept the kingdom from collapsing. Inside the White Tower, the oldest building of the castle, is an 11th-century chapel and historic Royal Armouries collections.
You can explore the castle and exhibits on your own, but a guided tour can help you navigate this popular attraction most efficiently. The Tower of London is also included in many tourist passes and combined attraction packages.

Top ways to experience Tower of London
The area
Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

- Chris MRoyal Palm Beach, Florida18 contributionsWorth the £ and time if you have both.Excellent history lessons in Central London steps away from Tower Bridge and the turbulent Thames. The Crown Jewels are housed inside. Plan the time of your visit to get a short, free, and fun guided tour by one of the Yeoman Warders. Plan way ahead to possibly get in to watch the daily closing ceremony for a minimal fee. The souvenir booklet is worth the £5 in my opinion. Prepare to spend a few hours, there is a LOT to see. Wear sturdy shoes as there are cobblestones everywhere inside and outside the walls. Food is available inside and outside. There is a water taxi/river cruise to Westminster just steps away also. Tower Hill Underground station is <5 minutes away.Visited November 2022Travelled with familyWritten 8 December 2022
- Quebec98Basel, Switzerland67 contributionsReally worth a visitAfter being to London so many times and always avoiding the Tower of London (as I thought it is too touristy) I gave it a go this time. How wrong I was to wait for such a long time: it is so interesting, all the history these walls and the Yeoman warders can tell, just great. I was easily spending four hours in there.... Can highly recommend it.Visited December 2022Written 13 December 2022
- teacher34Olympia, Washington662 contributionsExcellent! So much history. The Crown Jewels are kept here, so if there are many people visiting, go there first. We got an audio tour and were lucky to go into a church and one of the Beefeaters was speaking. He was amazing. We enjoy all the history he shared and what a prestigious branch of the service it is. Really interesting. The other thing we found amazing was the history of the ravens. What huge creature. I believe there are eight of them. They are kept there. So many parts to this tower, it was fascinating. From there we crossed the London Bridge and went to Burroughs Market.Visited September 2022Written 25 December 2022
- orangeblossomgelatoSan Francisco, California71 contributionsGreat tour as alwaysTook the beefeater tour 10 years ago and loved it and did it with a friend again this time and it's still one of the most entertaining tours. We had Yeoman Warder Scott Kelly for our guide and he's great! He gave special attention to all the kids on the tour, which I'm sure made their day. Line for tickets across the way was very long and a bit confusing as there were ticket booths for other sights in the area as well. But once you have a ticket, there wasn't a line for entrance into the tower. Crown Jewels was also not super busy the day I went. All the yeomen and other people who work in here were really responsive to random questions about the place and history and were very knowledgeable with answers!Visited November 2022Written 27 December 2022
- Ali19 contributionsFantastic PlaceWe had a fantastic day here. A must visitor attraction. Staff and service great. Lots to see. I was amazed at all the history and the displays were good. We left feeling that we had learnt a great deal.Visited October 2022Written 29 December 2022
- Wander688979California3 contributionsAwful queues, unable to see the Crown JewelsWe were really disappointed in queues. I knew it woud be busy but the ticket was misinforming. We queued up for the Beefeater tour which wasn't part of the Crown Jewel tour. My mom came specifically for this reason. It was freezing cold and the queue snaked around for over an hour.Visited December 2022Written 30 December 2022
- K&M rates platesSidcup, United Kingdom1,148 contributionsLong queuesCame here on the weekend of the queens jubilee for a walk around. The area was packed, the tower looked impressive. The grass verges round the outside could’ve done with a tidy up, didn’t go inside due to queuesVisited July 2022Travelled with familyWritten 31 December 2022
- Nimai HariChicago, Illinois398 contributionsIncredible amount of historyWe were on our way to the Tower Bridge and explored the area around the London Tower before. There is a lot to see around the London Tower and I would give yourself plenty of time. The proximity to the Thames River made it an easy location to get to as well as explore. This attraction has gone through many renovations as leadership of England has changed over time.Visited December 2022Written 31 December 2022
- sssmckLincoln, California86 contributionsGood visit, but go early to avoid crowds during high travel seasonsWe got tickets using Headout and made sure to select the first time slot available that day. It was a very very busy day and this was the best thing I could have done. Highly recommend trying to catch a tour with one of the Yeoman Warders if lossible, even if it's shortened due to the rain as ours was it is still a lovely experienceVisited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2023

Its well-preserved and impressive architecture is a sight to behold. It is filled with fascinating stories and history that will make any visit memorable. It is a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about England's past. The tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the grounds are beautiful.

This was great. I went with my 12 year old son and we spent about 3.5 hours including a lunch break. The Crown Jewel experience is amazing — dim lights, respectful music, so many gigantic stones in those heavy crowns. My son liked all the armor and weapons more…save room for the interactive section of that area. We both learned a lot, first with the Beefeater tour guide and then also after we peeled off. The cafe was really delicious and a beautiful room. Be aware there is a lot of walking and stair climbing! Oh and it was fun to meet the ravens!

Great experience. The 13:30 roar on the 5th of December was very informative and a great host. The staff were friendly. The cafe on site was great. The accessibility was good, there were benches to rest and seating. A few areas with stairs but so much to see without having many stairs. I would go again! The chapel and Crown Jewels were a beautiful site.

Having never been to the Tower of London but have been watching the the TV series we went with open minds to see how the English heritage has grown.
Some great history lessons and information provided, you can either follow the Yeomen Warders around and listen to them tell their many tales, or simply experience the history all by yourself.
We enjoyed wandering around and exploring.

I was lucky to arrive in time to catch a free tour by one of the Yeoman Warder, who gave a great presentation.
This is a very cool experience, getting to experience the infamous Tower of London.
I stood on Tower Green where Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey lost their heads and it was both unsettling and fascinating to be so close to history.
There's so much to see and your head will quickly fill up with info!
I thought I would be in and out in two hours but I was here nearly four hours, and it was worth it.
The Crown Jewels are housed in a separate building in the Tower and it's a cool exhibit. Get here ASAP because the line gets long...fast!
Expect to get your steps in, walking up and down a ton of steps, and ducking into narrow doorways, but it's worth it!

Will all the jewels still be on display from 9/20/22 on? Or are they in use for any of the ceremonies or the funeral?

This might be an unpopular question, but is it possible to visit the Tower of London in just 1.5hrs? Including the Crown Jewels (1st)? I’m trying to pack as much into 1 day as possible. Tips welcome!

I don't know the answer to this question. You can go to The Tower of London website and by tickets in advance, but it is just as easy to purchase them onsite.
