A place of inspiration. The gardens at Lowther castle have lain abandoned...

A place of inspiration. The gardens at Lowther castle have lain abandoned for 70 years, and the original plantings have long since disappeared leaving the the architectural outlines of 17th Century and Edwardian gardens intact despite WWII weapons testing in the gardens, since overplanted with trees and covered by moss and lichen. The castle ruins are a constant reminder of the powerful presence of this place and its role in history. A major restoration project started 4 years ago and has uncovered a stunning selection of garden remains and vistas - the Pate d'Oie, Rock Gardens, Pinetum, 17th C. yew avenue, stunning views from the escarpment, and so much more. Atmospheric and enchanting, these gardens encourage reflection on the stunning past of this unique place. A small restoration exhibition shows details of the work already undertaken on the castle ruin and courtyard areas as well as 'stunning before and after' images. Tree trail, rope swings for all ages, and wild play areas for children. We are a charity. Admittance fees help us to continue the on-going works.Opening hours 10.00am to 5.00pm everyday; adults £8, children under 16 free, well behaved dogs very welcome. Why not visit the Courtyard Cafe for light lunches, soups, sandwiches and a wonderful selection of cakes and bakes. Luxury Picnics (please order in advance) or make up your own from our 'take - away' selection. We also have a gift and plant shop in the stable block. We visited as a group of friends on a day out whilst visiting the area. It was a rainy day but we are not shy of the rain. Signposting to it wasn't brilliant and it is typical Cumbria narrow country roads so take care. The shop in the courtyard was closed, so there was no opportunity to browse; The entrance... More

A magical place to visit. This beautiful castle has a fairy tale look and is absolutely stunning. Lots of renovations going on around the gardens. Unfortunately we timed our visit badly as spring has not quite sprung there yet! Will definitely go back in the summer to see how the gardens have progressed. A worthwhile place to visit.

We were not sure whether to bother with this, it didn't seem to have much to offer and the weather was iffy. We are so glad we did bother. The remains of the castle are interesting and get you wondering what it would be like when occupied. The grounds are extensive and are being restored. There are a number of... More

Lowther is undergoing extensive renovation. The history of the place is fascinating and well worth looking into before your visit. The interest lies in what was and what it will be. There's just so much potential. The café is good, dog friendly and tasty food. I think the entry fee of £8 per adult is well justified. Definitely one to... More

The Grounds of Lowther Castle are a work in progress as the "lost gardens" are rediscovered and opened again to the public. We visited after a two year gap and were deleighted at the progress. Our Grandaughter LOVED the HUGE wooden castle…big enough for we adults to explore! She especially liked the zip wire and the rope swings dotted around... More

Had a lovely early spring walk through the gardens of this beautiful historic castle. It's a work in progress; much renovation is taking place, the amazing Hidden Castle adventure playground was just about finished and apparently will open next weekend - it looked spectacular and will be wonderul for both kids and adults. The very friendly and helpful lady volunteer... More

We couldn't enter Lowther Castle today because it was closed for maintenance. However we did enjoy the beautiful grounds. The estate is immaculately kept and today new parking facilities were being built for the spring season. It was lovely to view the castle across the lawns and I hope to return soon to complete the experience.
