On a very wet day, after 40 yrs of visiting Keswick, finally went to the Pencil museum. Was really surprised how much I enjoyed it! Please do the quiz they give you on entry or you will not get the most from your visit. It is a very small exhibition so by taking part it forces you to read everything and learn a lot. I was in there for almost 2 hrs which otherwise could have been an hour at most. You also get a worthwhile prize for finishing. I found the World War 2 secret pencil story fascinating. It is definitely worth a trip if you have a spare couple of hours.

Went her as a friend recommended, have to say we spent much longer here than expected and Throughly enjoyed it. There is a quiz with a prize which means you are very focused on the information and I learnt a lot. The exhibits are good and the gift shop has a large variety of art products. Some reduced but not cheap

Disappointingly our visit was totally spoiled by the cacophony of dogs who variously barked, whined and yapped all the way round. A couple also shook the rain from their coats all over nearby visitors. It’s a tiny place and there were several dogs there. We do not dislike dogs, just owners who do not control them. Whilst the museum cannot be responsible for the noise or the rain, why on earth let dogs into a museum?

You are giving a quiz and a souvenir pencil that you can keep at the start which is a really clever way to get you to engage with the exhibition which otherwise would've been quite dull. As it turned out, I actually really enjoyed the experience and learned quite a lot. My family were less engaged though but enjoyed the colouring and were impressed with the quality of the colours.

Arrived here early morning to find it already quite busy. The light rain may have been a factor.
The entrance to the museum is a fiberglass tunnel depicting a mine and is quite low. I bumped my head 3 times and I'm only 5' 10".
The museum soon became congested as children and adults were, on entry, given a quiz to complete. This caused a bit of a bottle neck.
That aside the displays were interesting and well layed out.
The gift shop had a great selection of pencil sets and books to purchase. There was also jewellery made from recycled pencils. There is a small coffee shop within the building.

Pencil museum itself was fine, but entered at about 3:50pm (last entry at 4) and then exited at around 4:30. Heavily pregnant and told the toilets shut at 4?! Despite the museum being open until 5. What place would shut its toilets an hour before closure and then wouldn’t allow a 37 week pregnant woman to use them?! Told to walk all the way back into the village to find some there. Appalling customer service.

Thank you for your recent review of the Derwent Pencil Museum. We are sorry to hear about your recent interaction with staff regarding the outside toilet facilities. This will be investigated and addressed by the Museum Manager and discussed with all Museum staff. Our toilet facilities are normally closed around 4pm to ensure there is adequate time for Museum staff to thoroughly clean and replenish the facilities for the next day. However, they should have been made available at your request. Please accept our appologies for any distress which may have been caused.

The Derwent pencil museum isn't huge, but has some fascinating exhibits - it's actually also worth making sure you see the video showing how pencils are produced today, which can be selected from the touch screen just after entering the museum. It shows a light onto something that is often overlooked, and traces the history of pencil making in the area (initially using local graphite deposits) to the current day. The exhibit on how pencils were made in World War II to contain a hidden map and compass is interesting.
There's a gift shop selling the full range of the sponsoring company's products, and small cafe that serves excellent cakes.
Parking onsite is controlled by the local council and incurs an extra fee.

A small but really interesting museum. If you're a lover of pencils, stationery, art, it's well worth it, and if not there's lots to learn. Take the adults and kids quiz on the way round. A bonus that it's dog friendly. My only disappointment, why no novelty sharpeners in the shop!
