Fantastic for art lovers

Lovely experience - staff were very friendly and everything is set out nicely. The tour is good and the free quiz means you get a free pencil and then a pack of four pencils as a prize for your quiz (which we received even though we missed the other half of the quiz over the page!). The children had a quiz too but our three year old lost interest while we were trying to complete the adult quiz. She could have sat and coloured at the children's tables but she didn't fancy it (good job we didn't try and complete all the questions!). If you're not interested in pencils/stationary/art, then this probably isn't for you. Otherwise, you'll love the history and then treating yourself in the shop. Cafe and toilets available.

Fascinating

Sounds simple and not really appealing to many people. Only a smalll museum but it truly is fascinating. You could walk around the museum in 5 minutes glancing at the exhibits. We were there for over three hours taking everything in and doing the museum quiz. A nice little cafe also. Although we were there over three hours you certainly need to allow at least 1 to 2 hours as below.
Very well worth a visit.

An interesting and varied museum.

Had a good visit to the museum. It was informative and interesting. Visiting on a kids craft day was a bonus. Cafe and toilets on site with ample parking.

Lovely museum

I came to the original museum years ago with friends and really enjoyed it so brought my partner this time. The quiz is a brilliant way to get you involved and reading everything. Really great museum, we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cafe shut,, expensive for a 5 minute walk indoors. Very short visit. Loads of pencils for sale. Need more but nothing else to say.

Did not disappoint!

Arrived reasonably soon after opening and plenty of parking - we paid for all day and spent the morning at the museum and the afternoon in Keswick. Prebooking is currently not required but masks are mandatory, which is good because it can get quite busy. There is a one way system in place, but they give you activity sheets (these are available for all levels: very young, children, and adults) which mean you end up going back and forth to answer the questions). There was a children's activity session running while we were there, which the kids loved, and plenty of places to stop and do some colouring.

The museum itself is small but very interesting. It's a great place to take children with even the shortest attention span. There were tables with drawing books available too - I had a go too while I waited for the kids to finish! The youngest loved the plane, the mannequin and the biggest pencil, and I enjoyed an exhibition from a local drawing group and the WW2 gadgetry. It was a fantastic morning out!

Disappointing, not worth a visit
Aug 2021
The museum is very small and consists solely of a few information panels and some static displays, plus of course, a big shop. To be fair to the museum, my expectations were based on a childhood visit many years previously, which I'm sure included much more and a factory tour. Now that the pencils are no longer made on site, this museum seems to have been left as a tourist trap with very little to offer unless you happen to be really into pencils! This is a museum about making pencils which doesn't actually show you pencils being made, except for a few tiny photos on static info boards. Disappointed in that regard.

Great for adults and children.

Great for kids and interesting for adults. Good basic on pencil making process and company history. Some lovely old boxes of pencils on display and a generous area for kids and adults to draw. Spent 2 hours inside which is great value for money. Got 11 free graphite and coloured pencils during our visit and saved £50 on a splendid box of Artist Pastels. Groupon ticket was only £10 for family entry. Well done Derwent Pencil Museum.

A lovely little find to enjoy a couple of hours. Although fairly small inside, it's packed with tones of pencil facts and it was particularly interesting learning about the use of pencils in WW2! The gift shop also has a fantastic selection of gifts for the art-lover! We can highly recommend; although maybe outside of school holidays if possible, as it was particularly crowded!

Small but friendly museum - probably more for art enthusiasts

My teenage daughter and I made an unplanned visit here when we were in Keswick during our summer holiday. She’s a keen artist and I occasionally sketch and we both use Derwent products a lot so were pleased to stumble across this museum. The staff were really friendly and made us feel very welcome. The museum itself was more interesting than we’d anticipated (particularly the exhibits on the company’s role in making WWII spy gadgets!). The visitor’s quiz was a useful way to engage with the exhibits and younger visitors could draw and colour for themselves. Everything was well presented and very accessible. I appreciate it might not be so interesting to people who don’t like making their own art. The museum itself is very small, and we wondered whether a larger exhibition might have been possible. My daughter also found the entry to the museum (a replica graphite mine with life sized mannequins) a little spooky!
