This was a fun few hours exploring. The staff were really friendly, knowledgable & helpful. We gained a deeper understanding about the life of the miners from the visit down the mine. Panning for crystals was fun!

This place was a real find! If you are at all interested in the history of the Lakes it is well worth a visit. We think of the Lakes as largely a farming area now which attracts loads of tourists, but in times gone by it was a thriving mining area, with a bewildering variety of ores and minerals below... The Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum is a fascinating site that is undergoing expansion as the narrow gauge railway is extended and the museum is soon to be relocated. The museum is currently located in a former quarry building and has an extensive quarry 'graveyard' of excavators and tipper trucks. The quarry railway offers rides along a track that goes... More

This is a great place when it's pouring with rain in the lakes and you still want to do some great photography. They have a superb steam train which they roll out during the day. You can also have a wonder around the large garages which give some great macro photography opportunities.

I visited Keswick in a cold and damp period, so an expedition which was partly indoors was greatly to be recommended. I've looked at Cumbria for so loing asa a rural county, that it comes as a big shock to realise that it is honeycombed with mines, and was once a big industrial area. Going a little way down the... Me, my partner and some of my partners family stayed in a cottage in the lakes for a week back in July/August and came here one cool wet day! The people running this place are very passionate and dedicated to the place and saved it from being closed and I do hope more people visit to support them. We got... More

Very interesting the just the history of Cumbrian geology and mining was worth the exceptionally low entry prices.(you pay for the museum, mine tour and train separately) Although there could of had a bit more information on the HUGE variety of machines

This is a lovely little place. We have bought a year pass as my boy is obsessed with trains, so we went twice in a week.Steam was running both days I understand it's diesel in quieter periods. There's loads of excavators too as it's home to the vintage excavator trust. The mining museum has lots of information and you could... More

Food mining museu. Enjoyed going into the mine but had hoped for a little more time in the mine in the tour. The museum was good with lots of information to read. Difficult to keep younger children entertained due to the large amouts of reading involved in museum, steam train was good, though very short. Staff very passionate about the... More

I have lived in west cumbria nearly all my life, and have never been here. So me and the wife visited last sunday. When you drive up, you see abandoned pieces of machinery dotted all around. The place is run by volounteers, who have fantastic knowledge and great emotion and enthusiasm for the place. We bought tickets for the museum,... More
