Stayed in Rose Castle cottage ( National Trust Owned ) at Tarn Howws. Fantastic spot , great walks in all directions . We were "fortunate" enough to have a little snow too , adding a real post card look to the cottage, tarn hows and the distant mountain vista. Even more fortunate that it was mild enough the day we... We were on a walk from Coniston to Tarn Hows that also took in Rydal Water, a superb 7 mile hike, but don't worry if you think that is a bit beyond you because the car parking at Tarn Hows is ample and there is a lovely accessible lakeside walk of around two miles. There was even an intrepid ice... More

The day was lovely and sunny and we found the car park easily enough. The parking was very expensive, as we wanted to amble around the tarn, we opted for four hours £6. There was quite a few families with boisterous children but luckily for us they were on the other side! The walking was easy with well maintained paths... More

First visit here, must have missed it in the past. Would recommend it to any first time visitors to the Lake district. The walks are easy and straightforward, good views and easy enough car parking which is National Trust, so free if your a member. The roads are VERY narrow here, turn left out the car park and head towards... More

A walk around Tarn How's never disappoints. But on this occasion we walked from Hawkshead village, across fields, through Hawkshead Hill and through the plantation and wood to the tarn. We walked up the left side of the tarn and then broke off to walk on up to the summit of Black Crag, at a little over 200 metres its... More

A great place to have short walk. Our walk was about one and a half hours and took us round the tarn. Unfortunately it was misty so views were poor. Parking was expensive.

There can be few prettier spots in the Lake District, or even the whole country. A large car park (for the Lake District) and an easy, well paved path all round the tarn, make this an excellent place to visit, particularly for those who would like some gentle exercise. Bring some binoculars for the birds - on our visit there... More

Everything you want in the Lakes but on a small scale. Can get a bit busy but worth the effort, unless it is raining!
