Originally constructed during Napoleonic times in preparation for a possible invasion, Chatham's Fort Amherst was also used as a civil defence centre in both world wars. The Fort has been in a near constant state of restoration since the 1980's by the Fort Amherst Heritage Trust, a charity who works hard to manage and maintain the vast site whilst sympathetically returning its grounds and buildings to their original state to ensure Britain's largest Napoleonic Fortress can be enjoyed by all.

Took my grandchildren (aged 9 and 12) for a tour of the tunnels and couldn't believe how much they enjoyed it. The 1.5 hour tour felt like no more than half an hour. The tour guide, Brian, certainly had a wealth of information and stories covering both WW2 and the napoleonic wars. Absolutely spellbinding - my grandchildren loved hearing the... More

I have patronised a number of 'greasy spoon' cafes, and must say that this establishment stands head and shoulders above many located in Medway. For one the location overlooking Chatham has a wonderful view. Secondly the cafe itself is clean and welcoming. Thirdly and most importantly, the food in particular the breakfast was well cooked and tasty. Fort Amherst used... More

Visited over Xmas so tunnels were not open so can only review the open to the public areas. What we got to see was very good and gave a good insight to the Forts history, would love to go back and see the rest one day.

We went on the tour which only runs once a day in winter (11am - but check before you go!). We were the only ones on the tour and it was brilliant! The tour guide, whose name escapes me (possibly Ron) was well informed and funny. He answered our questions and really made the fort come to life. This is... More

We were really disappointed not to be able to have a tour of the tunnels. Years ago you could walk through on your own but now they only do guided tours once a day in winter and we arrived too late which was a great shame having travelled from Norfolk. The grounds were very interesting and I know from past... More
