Fantastic zoo - friendly keepers and happy animals
Sep 2021 • Family
We had a fantastic day. The zoo is well laid out, with ample space for the animals in their large enclosures. The keepers are really helpful and friendly, it is great to hear about different successful breeding programmes and rescue efforts. The large spaces that the animals have make it interesting for them and they appear happy and relaxed, I have been to most of zoos and wildlife parks in the south and south east - some of which make me sad as the animals are cooped up. This was reflected in the fact that you may need to spend a few minutes having a good look in the trees, tree platforms, and other places in the enclosures for a sneaky peak! And always stroll back past later on your way back incase the animals were having a nap! I cannot speak for other people but we saw ALL the animals, with the exception of the honey badger! We also love port lympne (safari is great!) but actually think the enclosures for the cats are better at howletts - and it’s much better for little legs that tire easily as it is mostly flat! Loved seeing all the baby animals - three baby elephants, a litter of big cats and lots and lots of baby monkeys! Keep up the good work.

Lovely day out
Aug 2021 • Couples
Loved this place, the animals were sometimes hard to spot but the enclosures are really good. It's great to see that some animals are actually released back into protected areas of the wild unlike most zoos where they just pay lip service to stopping animals becoming extinct in the wild

A good day out!
Sep 2021
We spent a good 5 hours here and thoroughly enjoyed it, although the signage to get out isn't good! Animal enclosures are good

Disappointed
Sep 2021 • Family
Lovely day so the walk around was very pleasant. Overpriced and very poor that no discount given even though some of the main attractions eg Gorillas are closed. Toilets not clean. Staff pleasant.

Lovely day out, let down by restaurant experience
Sep 2021 • Friends
We visited the park today and had a lovely day overall. We were lucky to see most of the animals ( the tapirs always seem to be in hiding, but perhaps to be expected as they are semi- nocturnal!) and the elephants, gorillas and big cats were all brilliant to watch.
Having researched the options for lunch beforehand, we planned to have a meal in the Pavilion restaurant, which is advertised as providing hot meals and snacks. This was a quite important aspect of our day, as my 86 -year old Mum has health conditions which mean that the length of any day out and timing of meals need to be carefully planned. We reached the restaurant at 1.15pm to find that the only hot food available was pasties, sausage rolls and chips - there were no other hot meals of any description. We were expecting a "proper" meal as advertised - even a jacket potato would have been ok, but we were told that even these had all gone. It wasn't particularly busy in the park, and it seems crazy that any hot food had been sold by 1.15pm! Had we known that this was the case, we would have brought a packed lunch, and stopped to eat elsewhere once we had left the park.
I realise that lunch is not the most important park of a day out at the zoo, but due to the ages and health restrictions in our group, it was important to us. Please sort this out Howletts and give a more accurate idea on your website of the range of meals available so that folk in our situation can plan our day properly.
Love the park though , and the fabulous trees in and around the enclosures

Not very child-friendly
Sep 2021
We were very excited to take our 5yr old to Howletts despite the tickets being very expensive. The park was very nice, though it was vert hard to calculate the distance between different places some of which were quire far apart. The playground and pic nic area was excellent.

We attended two talks by one of the keepers which we thought would enhance the experience and trigger desire for nature conservation among young people. We were shocked at how short the talks were and how little information was aimed at children. The talks were not interactive at all and the young members of the audience who made up more than half of the audience lost interest pretty quickly.

Overall it was an ok experience but investing in audience communication and making the tours more interactive would help. Tours by the keepers should not be treated as a side extra that Howletts staff engage in as little as possible, it's a key part of inspiring the new generation to a)want to come to the park again and b)take an active interest in biodiversity conservation.

Please improve the visitors experience for the sake of the animals
Sep 2021
Having read some of the recent revues I agree that for everyone, but young children especially, the chances of seeing many animals up close is very limited. Ivy growing on the external fencing prevented us from seeing a tiger and the herd of elephants were put into a field that was far away from the only viewing point. I realise that your reply will state that the animals welfare is your top priority but there has to be a balance between that and providing an good experience for visitors, otherwise the income received from visitors will diminish as will the valuable conservation work and the welfare of the animals. Other wildlife parks/zoos seemed to have achieved this, I hope Howletts can do the same. The highlight of our granddaughters visit should not have been the closeness she came to a robin on the pathway !!

Disappointing
Sep 2021 • Family
I agree with other reviewers, this used to be a great place to bring the kids. Unfortunately the place is looking very run down and neglected. I understand the animals are not there to perform tricks but it would be nice to see some at all. The animals that we did see appeared to be a bit depressed. I'm all for conservation and we'll done for that but, like I say it's not the place it was

Extremely disappointing
Sep 2021 • Family
Visited today and was extremely dissatisfied with experience. Very expensive and well overpriced and not value for money. Most of the enclosures overgrown so unable to see animals. Old Gorilla encloses closed off to public (Not mentioned when buying the tickets) Food was extortionate by the elephant enclosure especially, £5.00 for a hot dog (RIP off) Basically works out as a very expensive walk around a park. The rope climbing place was closed. Let's just say it was a terrible experience and would advise everyone to save your money and spend it elsewhere.
