St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

Beautiful place. So glad we visited. Stunning inside and out and very well kept. Was a must for us to see while staying in St Albans for a short break to central London.

This is well worth a visit and if you can take the guided tour. The information is very interesting and the history of the Cathedral is amazing. Also take a walk through the surrounding park. Very peaceful area.

I am not normally one for looking around Cathedrals, the chilly weather pointed us towards the cathedral which was most interesting and not only enjoyable but also informative

We happened to go into the abbey around 1pm on a Thursday, and on impulse took the guided tour with brilliant guide Jean. That spur of the moment decision definitely made the visit, because we learned so much and Jean put it across so interestingly. There were only four of us on the tour, and we thought we knew a... Well worth a visit. Very interesting mixture of very old parts with quite modern. Beautiful stone alter. Worth buying a book which is very reasonably priced. Glad we stopped

Enjoyed visiting this Cathedral although we couldn't see it all as there was a conference being held in the main area. The café is very nice with real tea in quaint china cups and nice food. It's wheelchair accessible with a disabled toilet inside the cathedral. There is also a lift for wheelchair users to be able to get right... More

We were lucky enough to arrive just a couple for minutes before a guided tour was due to start. We did learn so much and the lady there was amazing making it very entertaining.

I hadn't visited the Cathedral since I was at school and many years and miles have intervened, however I was fixing up a little birthday treat for a friend who lives not far from St Albans and this evening tour sounded tempting. It was a truly lovely experience. £12 including some nibbles and a glass of vino in the refectory... More

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your visit to the Cathedral. It's great to hear you enjoyed the tour and took a friend on it for a birthday treat. We're totally biased of course but agree - seeing the building lit only by candles is so different and atmospheric. I've passed on your kind comments to... More
