St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago.The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the shrines of Saint Alban and Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

We had not planned this stop in our visit and at the last minute a family member recommended the stop. The cathedral is breathtaking and the individuals working within we’re very helpful and courteous. Well worth the visit.

Located just out of London we took a day trip to St. Albans to se the cathedral and Roman ruins/museum of Verulamium. We took the cathedral free tour which made the visit even more interesting.

Located at the site of the earliest Christian worship in Britain, the St Albans Cathedral is simultaneously grand and rustic. Featuring faded, ancient devotional paintings on the walls as well as spectacular stone carving, one feels the trajectories of architectural evolution in the building much...More

The Cathedral is stunning and full of history. It’s a sacred part of St Albans and there were many visitors at the time of our visit. Very peaceful and beautiful.

Very peaceful even though very busy at the bank holiday weekend. The grounds and lawns are clean and well worth a sit in the sunshine

This magnificent building has been in existence for hundreds of years. Developed over time it now offers the visitor many aspects of cathedral life. It has a shop, an excellent cafe and houses the tomb of St. Alban. It is possible to arrange tours, or...More

We attended a traditional Eucharist service on a beautiful spring day and were particularly struck by the lovely setting. Unusually the cathedral doesn't charge for admission, and even more unusually there is no scaffolding to spoil the outside aspect. Many wonderful medieval or earlier images...More
