This is an interesting cemetery just to stroll around - there are interesting grave stones - some of them commemorating Titanic victims, or sailors or local dignatories. They also keep part of the cemetery "fallow" so there are wild flowers, wild garlic, green woodpeckers and butterflies. There are tarmac paths but you can also wander around , taking care not... Although not right in the middle of Southampton the cemetery is a centre for the Dead, as with most cemeteries this place is tranquil and interesting, the gravestones tell short, interesting stories and the lichens are as ancient as the stones.

I walked through the old cemetery on the way to the common - the ground is uneven, subsiding in places and overgrown in other areas... it is somewhere that works, you can get lost in thought and explore the grounds. Quiet to be alone with your thoughts and safe in the knowledge that people are going to leave you alone.... More

I have a thing for cemeteries and enjoy wandering around looking at the gravestones and what they have to tell us. Probably due to my profession, I am interested in all things History/Archaeology related. This cemetery is quite large and its organisation demonstrates how it grew throughout time responding to needs of expansion. Thee are many beautiful gravestones here with... More

We use this place all the time when I need peace and quiet or if the common is exceptionally busy. Me and dog wander around reading the headstones and following the little paths to see where they lead. Many old graves here including Titanic staff who perished in the disaster. Two very pretty building at the entrance of the cemetery... More

Been to this cemetery many, many times and always find it peaceful and interesting. Having some ancestors buried there, but could not find the graves, I contacted Friends of Southampton Old Common Cemetery group and they not only assisted me by providing the plot number, they also arranged to meet me there and show me where the graves are! With... More

Been a few times to visit some old family graves up there and all ways found it a nice quiet peaceful area to walk round. Also a family member contacted someone there about a family grave and they found them very helpful.

Lots of interesting grave stones here on your way along the main path to the Common. There are many graves from the titanic which are marked with blue sticks. There is also a Commonwealth war memorial.

I took a short walk around the Old Cemetery last week - lots and lots of gravestones! I probably could have spent longer there, but was pushed for time, such a pity to see parts of it very overgrown, I dread to think what it must be like in summer! But other parts are slightly better "kept"
