To residents of Southampton the Bargate is as normal as looking up and seeing the sky, however... If the council tried to demolish it there would be a riot! It's open at times, but I can only just remember going inside it once in 45 years, you can walk through it all the time, as its part of the old... More

If you go shopping in Southampton City Centre you're almost bound to come across this historic building. It's wonderful to see something with such a lot of history attached still standing among its modern surroundings. It seems as if some of the nearby shopping centre which was built just 30 years ago will shortly be demolished. This has to say... More

Bargate is open 7 days 10-5 for the "BAS 8" Art Show. There is a video and sound piece on show, running time of the main piece is 12 minutes. There is a 4 minute documentary as well. It is a bit quirky but worth a look, and it won't take too much of your time. Stairs access only. However... More

Really interesting historical structure - worth a look! Right on the main street from West Quay back to the cruise ship pier.

Proudly alone amid a plethora of soulless commercial premises stands Southampton's Bargate, the original Norman gatehouse guardian of the old walled city. This atmospheric building has seen so many comings and goings for around 800 years, from trams running through its central opening to the bombers of WW2 which helped to destroy many of the old buildings of the city... The problem with local councils in Britain is the lack of municipal pride- and here is your outstanding example. You know that nobody cares when you look at the state of the pedestrianised dump that is southampton- this important monument stands in the middle of an area around which they have decided to build a poor quality shopping mall and... lovely building situated in the heart of town, a lot of history can be learned from visiting here. With a variety of coffee shops and food courts. I have been here many times from when I lived here.

There it is, a gateway to the old city right in the middle of the modern pedestrianised shopping precinct. An interesting relic, shows how thick the city walls were, and the "Offices" either side as you pass through.

An amazing piece of history surrounded by colorful zebras for some promotion being undertaken by the zoo. Worth the visit to drink in the history of the building as long as you can ignore the surrounds which detract from the magnificent building.
