If you are walking the walls you'll run into the bargate as you walk up High Street from the quay. Sadly it is totally commercialized with stores on either side. Hard to imagine what the old Town looked like. There is even a ferris wheel...More

The Bar Gate was one of the oldest gates into the city. It has interesting architecture and 2 sculpted lions that protect the entrance.

Thinking that Southampton has not much to offer, the Bargate is one of the main attractions that a tourist should visit. You can even get inside if you are lucky enough and find some open days.

This was the entrance to Southampton and in medieval times was surrounded by a moat. It was constructed by the Normans around 1180 and has been cleaned in recent years. It is a stunning piece of historical architecture as are the rest of the walls...More

A main building in the middle of Southampton, standing proud, and very picture perfect. Highly recommended.

Southampton suffered badly from bombing in the war and until recently was rebuild by architects with little skill or taste . It is indeed very lucky that this splendid gate in the old city wall survived and is well worth seeing .

The remains of the gate to the old town, this marks the start of the historic area where you can find remains of the old city walls. A famous landmark for Southampton.
