About
Each year a changing selection of 150 paintings and drawings from the museum’s significant collection of works by Sir Alfred Munnings is hung chronologically throughout eight rooms. From less familiar early apprentice poster designs to the explosive horseracing scenes for which Munnings is most well-known, the displays chart the artist’s life and six-decade career. Cafe, shop, plenty of free parking.

In the Presence of a Master
Sep 2020
What a privilege to be immersed for an hour or so in the palpable presence of a master. Sir Alfred had a full and fascinating life of tragedy and triumph - a truly great man.

Superb musuem

A fascinating museum in a beautiful setting. This was the home of Alfred Munnings for many years and now contains a selection of his finest paintings. As an artist I found it most inspiring to learn more about his life and ideas about his art.

Stunning collection of his paintings in his own home
Sep 2019
Just outside of Dedham in a lovely house that Munnings actually lived in. Large & stunning collection of his paintings with special exhibitions every now & then. Famous for his horse paintings but, actually, I was very impressed with some of his non-horse ones as well.

Last Day of the Season
Sep 2019 • Couples
We only live 30 minutes away but yet had never been to this gem of a gallery. We went to see a specific exhibition on its closing day, but actually were blown away by the quality of the permanent exhibition and the beautiful of the house. The tea room was splendid too!

Special exhibition explained by art historian
May 2019
We went on an organised trip from our local art society to view the Munning's collection. The specialist who showed us round was very informative and told us a lot about the artist and his house. We then enjoyed a very nice lunch in the tented tea room in the beautiful gardens, definitely a trip in the summer would not have been so pleasant in the pouring rain.

Well Presented Collection in Munnings House
Sep 2019
The house is beautifully kept to reflect Munnings' life and work. The paintings are set out in chronological order through his life .
Staff are friendly and helpful and there's an excellent tea room with cakes and light meals. Plenty of parking too. An unspoilt gem

Wonderful lunch followed by stunning art
Oct 2019
Visited to view the Canadian Army paintings which did not disappoint. Decided to have lunch in the associated cafe beforehand, and experienced good food and very good service.

Will definitely visit again next year.

Been looking forward to this all year
Nov 2019
And it didn't disappoint. The permanent exhibition is staged in furnished rooms in the house - I am in love with the circular garden room - and tells a wonderful story about the man and his work. There's lots of humour and surprises which I won't spoil - but look out for the sketches and for the family dog. Munnings fans - take your time with the paintings you know well, 'My wife, my horse and myself' is everything you expect it to be, but the painting of his wife on her grey on Dartmoor is mesmerising. The Canadian exhibition is now finished but I'm so glad we saw it. Alongside the heartwrenching images of those brave men and their horses there are more surprises - the lumber extraction and peaceful farms which belie the horrors going on a few miles away. If you go, try to make it on a weekday when its less busy so you can take your time and really enjoy this extraordinary exhibition, even without the war paintings it's a must.
