Looking for a fantastic day out? This family-owned attraction is small enough to provide a friendly and personal service, with enough to keep visitors happy all day. What sets Totnes Rare Breeds apart is the opportunity to be within hugging range of all the animals. Most enclosures can be entered for close-up stroking, patting and cuddling. The Garden Café (outside the farm) offers made-to order dishes at reasonable prices, from indulgent snacks to tasty meals.

We had an hour to kill in Totnes and weren't sure whether to go on the steam train to Buckfastleigh or visit the rare breeds farm. Our children vetoed the train so we headed to the rare breeds farm with low expectations. Actually it was lovely! We got to feed the red squirrels with monkey nuts which we got from... More

After a magical ride on the steam railway my sister and I visited the Rare Breeds Zoo. We are not the greatest of animal lovers but for those that are we gave this zoo a big thumbs up. But the jewel in the crown for us was the cream tea we had at the Garden Cafe. Wow this was THE... More

We stopped off at the cafe after our steam train trip from Buckfastleigh. Lunch was as lovely as last time we visited 2 years ago - such helpful and friendly staff. Excellent choice, even for vegetarians (we are usually limited) and huge portions. We very much enjoyed various sandwiches and soup. Thank you for being so child friendly - a... More

Like others, I visited the railway and had lunch at the farm. The ploughmans is better and larger than you'd get in a restaurant or pub and similarly priced or even cheaper depending on your choice of pub/restaurant. I've only used the cafe but on previous visits they've brought some of the owls out onto the railway station, they were... More

Decided to go here for my daughters 2nd birthday as she loves animals. The farm is small but has lots of chance to get close to the animals. It only took us about an hour and a half to see everything but for our 2yr old and 4yr old it was just about right. They got to stroke chicks, touch... More

We visited the farm in conjunction with going on the railway! We had a really lovely lunch in the cafe sitting outside in the sunshine and then were really surprised when we went inside to find such a lovely farm. It was beautifully kept and all the animals were in enclosures, some of which you could go into. Our 3... More

This place is tiny, but a must if you're an animal lover, as you get up close and personal with the residents. We had a lovely talk and intro with the owls (never stroked one before, so that was a treat), got to feed all the goats and sheep - and this gets really funny when they all a bit... More
