Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

We had a very informative guided tour round the castle. The house is lovely and it's history is intriguing. We didn't see much of the gardens as the weather was bad, but there is a vast deer park I'm sure worth a walk when the weather is good.

Powderham looks after you from an enjoyable conducted tour of the house to a walk on the wild side. We also enjoyed the walled garden with its children's play area and the menagerie of animals. Finished off with tea for two.

We visited on 18th May. There was filming whilst we were there as Mary Berry was in the Victoria Kitchen which we could not visit. Apart from that a great day. You can only go around the "castle" with a guide and our guide Dave is obviously a wannabee actor. He was very informative but very funny. Lovely tea room... More

Doing the standard things such as viewing the house - which is amazing, a good mix of architectural genre, being able to walk the same stairs as Anthony Hopkins (Remains of the Day) seeing the beautiful rose garden with such sweet smelling magnificent roses, the family chapel - such a small part of a visit to this venue. The grounds... More

We had the most amazing day here at the Castle and the Castle tour was the highlight of the whole day with Alan who was excellent with our 3 children and included them throughout the whole tour. If in Devon this is a must visit!!

Built in Norman times Powderham Castle has been in the same family ownership ever since; the family tree can be traced back to French origins some who came over with the conqueror in 1066. The castle is located in the most superb large estate which is populated by a fine herd of deer, the coast is not far away to... More

We toured the castle with a guide which is the only way permitted. However the guide, Mandy, was so knowledgeable that we would have missed an awful lot without her excellent explanations. Indeed we would have walked past a number of items without appreciating their significance or use. The castle is an eclectic blend of designs in recognition of the... More

An informative talk and tour of the castle with much to see - but our group was too large so was hard to see a lot of the items in the rooms. Had a coffee but was not very warm! and cakes were OK, but have had better. A bit pricey overall so make sure you have time (and weather)... More

On arrival, we had planned to do "our own thing", but soon realised that access to the castle was as part of a guided tour. The gentleman who showed us around was very knowledgeable, friendly and totally accepted the range of dogs & children who formed a minor part of the tour group. I'm so glad that we didn't "do...
