One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Very nice for a drink but I wouldn't buy a cake as they are not covered up. It's been done up recently. Lovely views out to sea

I can't believe I missed this place. In all the years I've lived and worked in and around Torbay, I have only just discovered this gem of a place to visit. English Heritage have done a marvellous job of making its history come to life with displays and large scale animations. Walking into a room full of cannon and suddenly... More

I went to see Dartmouth Castle on the spur of the moment, without any expectations save that I wanted to see something properly old and historic. This is a good little castle, which ticked the "properly old" box and would be great to visit with kids who are interested in history. It is a military building - it was used... More

Split across 3 main buildings this isn't really a castle more a small fort. Interesting displays about the use of the castle over the years in protecting the harbour. Cannons, weapons on display and interactive things for children to do like try on different helmets and play games the soldiers used to play whilst on watch. The views are great... More

Lovely walk from the town and great view when you get there. Small castle which you can do a tour of in 30 mins. Worth a look if you are in Dartmouth with time to spare.

The site is run by English Heritage so will be quite pricey to visit for families with several children, unless you are a member and entrance is free. Amazing small castle used to defend us from the Spanish and French. Also played a role in the English Civil War. Lots of canons and batteries for kids to explore. Ideal for... More
