One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

A nice way to watch the sun come up and take the circular walk, was there in the Autumn to a riot of colours, nice church and a bracing walk down to the beach if you want it.

Definitely worth the 3 mile coastal walk. What a welcome relief for tired legs winding up and down the coastal path. Tea, juices, ice creams all on abundance and what a view’ don’t miss this.

Visited Dartmouth Castle on a lovely day in October. Excellent and knowledgeable welcome in the shop, fantastic views. We got there and returned to the harbour from there on the small ferry. Although not particularly cheap if you have a family, £5 return per person,...More

We walked from Dartmouth down to the castle, there are great views along the way. On our midweek visit in early October there were not many visitors so the castle was empty. There is plenty of information about the history and castle. The views out...More

A short walk from town centre Dartmouth Castle is worth exploring, with some of the old navel guns still in evidence, apparently they are planning to fire on of the bigger guns again at some point

Fascinating history from the privateer (or should that be pirateer!) John Hawley right through to WW2. We purchased the guide which, when used as a supplement to the very good information boards, gave a great overview of the castle and its story. The castle is...More

there are a lot of steep challenging steps so I'd advise against this one for anyone with mobility issues.
