One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Prior to travelling, we accessed the website and were looking forward to spending an entertaining couple of hours. Unfortunately what was found in reality did not compare with that described and we came away disappointed.

Absolutely amazing day out. Fantastic views, great castle telling a fair bit of history and a nice piece of cake with a cup of tea at a cafe overlooking the waters next to it.

A great place to visit especially if you like naval history. We walked to the castle from Bayards Cove and made a morning of the visit. The staff were really welcoming and let us into the lower gun room without us having to get down some very steep steps. A great place for kids as there is plenty of ancient... More

Very nice for a drink but I wouldn't buy a cake as they are not covered up. It's been done up recently. Lovely views out to sea

The castle is well worth a visit. Fascinating history and well preserved. The coffee shop is also a great spot, especially in the sunshine. Lovely views out to sea and a perfect photo opportunity!

I can't believe I missed this place. In all the years I've lived and worked in and around Torbay, I have only just discovered this gem of a place to visit. English Heritage have done a marvellous job of making its history come to life with displays and large scale animations. Walking into a room full of cannon and suddenly... More

I went to see Dartmouth Castle on the spur of the moment, without any expectations save that I wanted to see something properly old and historic. This is a good little castle, which ticked the "properly old" box and would be great to visit with kids who are interested in history. It is a military building - it was used... More
