The Museum houses collections exploring the history of Chester, with particular emphasis on the Roman occupation showing some interesting local finds. The actual building dates back to the 17th century and the main staircase is very impressive. Artwork and portraits and a Silver collection, also room reconstructions of the Victorian and Georgian period can also be seen. There is also... More

The only drawback is that the museum is situated somewhat away from the main city centre and it could do with some better sign posts in order to find; however, it's worth the walk. Great if you want to find out some more about the Romans in Chester loads to see on the ground floor, even had roman luggage labels, buckles coins and a model of the roman fort. Also lots of natural history stuff from victorian collectors on the first floor, a reasonable selection of average victorian art. Also have a reconstruction of... More

The building itself is full of character, with a winding staircase and little corridors leading off to unexpected rooms. The displays are interesting, and are mainly on the Roman history of Chester. There was also an excellent display on LGBT history from Roman times to the present, which was a subject I knew nothing about - I think this display... More

A small museum but lots to see. The Roman artifacts are really interesting & a whole gallery is given to Roman tombstones & is well worth a visit. It tells of the people relating to the stones & lots more. this is one of the best collections of roman tombstones in Britain. Upstairs there is a small art gallery &... More

Do not miss a visit to this museum - it really brings to life the history of life in Chester. Amazing display of nearly 2000 year old Roman tombstones together with a vivid description of what life was like then. Also, a series of rooms with lifesize figures in them showing what life would have been like in the last... More

On entry we enjoyed the Inuit Exhibition and art work, and the room with Roman stones which included an area dedicated to LGBT which we found surprisingly explicit but very interesting. In some rooms we found the art work was hung in a very old fashioned style, and the natural history room was boring in its layout and lacking in... More
