Stranded in the Fens as it is, Ely cathedral is stunning and HUGE. It is well set up for tourists and I highly recommend visiting at 5.30pm on a Tuesday or Thursday (check on the website) and sit in the Quire and listen to evensong...More

The building is of course totally magnificent - look up in the hugely long nave at the decorated ceiling - how did they do that? There is so much to see and admire in the years of history represented. If possible stay for a 5.30...More

As you arrive at this city, the cathedral dominates the surroundings and is stunning. It is big and you will spend a good hour walking around looking and reading about its history. If you want a great experience go on the middle tower (165 steps...More

I was pleasantly surprised to be provided free entry as we lived within the city of Ely (though albeit very much in the outskirts). My American husband is still not used to the crazy old buildings we have in this country and he thought the...More

The most beautiful stained glass windows and very spacious. A little disappointing as you had to pay to see different areas. There were untidy flower arranging areas all around with several ladies at work. They were obviously preparing for something, maybe harvest festival. I didn't...More

We took the 3pm tour of the West Tower. 288 Steps! Very good guide. Really worth doing for the views. We chose this one as opposed to the Octagon tour as the latter is more confined. Beautiful cathedral.

A trip to Ely would not be complete without visiting the Cathedral. I took the tour to the West Tower that involves going up 288 steps to the top most tower. Views of the city and beyond are spectacular however the tour was not as...More

Recently visited Ely and really enjoyed out walk around the city browsing through the market and quiet Cathedral grounds. The building itself is vast but beautiful and we spotted it from miles away as we were driving in. Well worth a view.

Not too far, about ten or fifteen minutes, along the river, then through the gardens and park, and along The Gallery to the West door.
