I'm sure that amongst the cognoscenti this amazing museum is very well known. I'd never actually been even though we live but 20 miles away. Enter through the main entrance, up the stairs and turn right. The next 3 rooms in a counter clockwise direction will leave you spellbound. I won't spoil it by telling you what you'll see, just... There is currently an exhibition called COLOUR at the Fitzwilliam Museum to celebrate its 200th anniversary. The exhibition displays many examples of medieval illuminated manuscripts from the museum's collection with a few borrowed from other institutions. This is accompanied by displays of pigments used by artists and an explanation of scientific techniques used to investigate the manuscripts. Are you still... More

We visited on Saturday to see the current Colour exhibition. The illustrated manuscripts were beautiful and very clearly laid out along with lots of information about the history and science involved in producing each piece. A brilliant exhibition, well worth a visit as is the museums permanent collection.

Don't forget to ask for a floor plan, or you might miss something. We forgot to bring ours from our previous visit with us and while we knew what we wanted to see that we had seen before (the Millais paintings, Egyptian room, owl punch bowl, porcelain collection, militaria, French impressionists' paintings and Dutch landscapes, we failed to realise where... Some would believe they were in New York if you dropped them in the museum foyer. A grand museum, lots to see- from sculptures and porcelain to coins and paintings. Cannot believe such a great museum is free to enter- a great way to fill in a couple of hours when in town. Staff and volunteers are very friendly!

In a city of such a small size as Cambridge it is very impressive that there is a large museum with such an outstanding collection as this, covering not just Western civilization and art but many other civilizations (e.g. ancient Egypt, Greece + Rome, and the Far East.)

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the University of Cambridge's collection of art and historical artefacts. The collections are impressive and well presented. It is a fairly traditional museum with a minimum of modern "gee-wizzery" - you need to concentrate, and to read the copious text and labels to get the best out of it. Nothing wrong with that, it's how museums... More

It has been nearly a lifetime since I visited this museum and it was as great as I remembered. It was great to wander through the wonderful exhibits on show on the several floors. There was even a free concert on the first in one of the art galleries. My wife and I spent many hours at this location making... More

Free, loads of things to explore, what's not to like? One of the more interesting museums I have been in a while. I especially enjoyed the Ancient Egypt exhibition. Wish I had had more time!
