The drive up to the plateau through steep mountains was awe inspiring. En route the visit to the monastery of Kera with its 14th century wall paintings & the lovely icons in the church was fascinating. One very enjoyable aspect for us ladies was that the queue for the toilets was only for the men! The ladies had plenty of... More

There is the Dikteon Antron (Dikteon cavern), and is the cavern of Zeus, he was grown up here ; this country is a real adventure; This highland is the most fertilie in the Lasithi region and has 10.000 windmills, as time goes by, slowly they are disappearing . One after the other, they are replaced by modern Energypumps.

Wonderful, spectacular place with great atmosphere. Sadly, of the HUNDREDS of classical Cretan windpumps we saw 15 years ago, only a very few remain working - the rest are just rusty skeletons in various stages of decay. If you're willing to risk your hire car on some fairly dubious 'roads' you can drive pretty much anywhere through the plain itself... More

We did rent a car and explored the Lassithi Plateau. After an exciting adventures drive over the mountains you arrive at the Lassithi Plateau. There is a main road which leads around the valley and it takes approximate 1 1/2 hours to drive all the way around. Try to stop and have lunch or a coffee in one of the... More

We were recommended this as a good place to visit and were certainly not disappointed! Amazing views on the way up, and many beautiful villages to explore when you get there.

We rented a car out of Elounda for this trip. We just went through the Cyclades, so we wanted a change of view from dry, scrubby coastal topography, and we got it! The road up from Malia is faster and less windy than the one from Agios Nikolaos. While there are some tight turns, you never feel like you are... More

We hired a car for a few days and one was spent driving up the mountain to see the plateau. We were about 3,000 feet up and the air feels very pure. Once over the top the plateau is set out below like a huge basin. You can drive around the circumference of the plateau which is approx 30 miles... More
