Biskupin
Sep 2019
This is probably one of most famous places in Polnad, it would be hard to find anyone in the country who didn't hear the name Biskupin. It all started in 1933, when during drainage works they lowered the water level in the lake, and started to find some strange items. But it wasn't till local teacher Walenty Szwajcer came across one of those ancient objects, to realise that this was quite special. They quickly informed the univeristy scientists from Poznań, and soon after Biskupin wasn't just a small unknown village anymore. They discovered a whole gród (medieval fortified wooden settlement) pretty much intact. The archeological excavations were continued during WWII, and after that till about mid seveties of 20th century. In 1950 a small museum has been established, which grew and grew, to became a huge complex, after last, recent investements. The gród itself is covered with soil and mud again, what we can see, is a replica made for tourists needs. But exept from that well known sight of one alley of the former gród, the museum offers many more settlements from medieval times, all reconstructed here, to show different ways of living, back in the day. Visiting the replica of the gród takes about 15 minutes, but the circular walk around every little settlement, with discovering stories about them, takes well over an hour in some speed. Restaurants and souvenir shops also available. Huge car park at the entrance. Railway stop on Żnin narrow gauge railway right by the entrance, thou those trains run very limited shedule outside summer holidays. Definitelly a must see for anyone, even if the core findings from 1933 are now somewhat overwhelmed by all those recent additions.

Great re-enactors bring this museum to life.

It’s a big area but the clearly marked paths make it easy to find the way around. Fans of Stone Age history will be fascinated by the reconstructions and the re-enactments of Stone Age crafts and living. There is not a lot of information in English, mostly it’s Polish, but many of the guides speak English.
It’s off the public transport track, but if you go on a weekend or public holiday the train may be running, otherwise driving there is the best option but free parking is limited.
A fun day out for history buffs.

Pleasant experience

Cool historical site, especially meaningful to Poles. Very nice to walk around to see excavations and reconstructions. Though, 50% of experience is the events that take place regularly - crafts, archery, dancing, cuisine... be sure to check calendar on the museum website when planning a visit.

Museum in the open air

Great place to see where Poland really started. It is not maybe much left from the ancient times but they rebuilt it quite convincingly. A lot of activities to pick up and the guided tour was really interesting. The kids will be in heaven but also adults can have a good time. Good weather will make the visit certainly more successfull.

Ancient settlement

If You are in Torun/Bydgoszcz, find a day to visit it. I recommend to leave a car in Żnin and take an old train to Biskupin, fun for kids. Reserve hole day. The castle and area around is very extensive. It worth to see it.

The best open air musem in Poland
Jun 2018 • Couples
This museum is without doubts the best open air museum in Poland. Must see for all those who would like to go into details of Polish history, and beginings of Polish state. Well preserved and restored, with huge amount of knowledge you can take out of there. Worth to mention is that there is a cultivation of some antient plants and mini zoo, and many, many other atractions.

Unearthed history
Aug 2018 • Family
This would be more like three and a half stars, if I could rank it that way. I did not take a guided tour, but I did purchase the earphones that explain everything in English. There are a couple thing that could have been better. Once you are inside, there is no set route or great guidance on where to go. We essentially just wandered around and did make it through, but with little structure. There was a remake of a village with workers in old costumes that will show you their crafts from that time in history. That was pretty cool to see. However, they all did charge you if you wanted to participate and sold their trinkets at each turn. The “fight” that was choreographed was pretty comical and a bit of a parody. It seemed as if there was some competition between the men on who would be the last one standing. Be prepared to walk a good distance and bring food if you do not want to wait 45 minutes for food to be made at one of the concessions stands. All in all, it was a great place for history buffs and was impressive to see the recreations of the old homes/buildings.

Its nice to see a bit of Polish history in this rebuilt settlement around the lake, the place was more aimed at children and education side but as adults it was still nice to see the buildings and the way they lived all those years ago

Great historical value, poor performance
May 2018 • Family
It's dissapointing place. Important if you want to know more about human history but you need to spend a lot of money if you want to experience it. Making beads , jewerely or some jars - you have to pay. Some people show something but most of them is really unhappy with their activity. Only one girl (at funeral) was smilling answering the question, the rest was really bored, not eager to answer or even rude. But you can always buy a lot of stuff you don't need. Yey. Hey, is someone smart haven't said that it's better to collect memories, experiences and knowledge than things?

An archeological village with lots of houses where you really can see haw life used to be some thousand years ago.
Especially if you go there the third week in september, when there is a great festival and lots of people showing how articraft was done at that time.
