We arrived hoping to see a large boat go through lock 3 but instead got to watch two small leisure boats go through. Kids were quite fascinated with the way the water is taken out of the lock and then the lock is refilled. The lookout platform is excellent (and different from when I was a kid in the late... More

As a kid, my parents would setup a spring Picnic every year to follow a ship through the canal. We as a couple did it this month and thoroughly enjoyed it again. A must for all to see. Lots of places to picnic and view the canal.

This is a great attraction to go to to see the huge ships that go through the canal. If you are visiting Niagara you have to see the Welland Canal. There are many locks and bridges and you can get easy, close, free parking and get close to the gigantic Lakers. From Port Colborne to St. Catharines there are many... More

On a vacation with wife. We took a drive along the canal and watched a couple of ships going through the locks. Interesting process. Just fun to see the ships up close.

This is an interesting feature of the Welland region. It is fun to be caught at a bridge and have to wait for a ship to pass through.

If your in the Niagara Region, and want to see just how a mammoth laker can climb or descend the Niagara Escarpment, you have to go to Thorold just on the outskirts of St.Catharines. All ships whether climbing the escarpment on their way to Lake Erie, or descending on their way to Lake Ontario do so using the simple force... More

After travelling to New York city and walking along the Hudson river, I realised that the Welland Canal walkway could be so much more. Its time to make this a family friendly area and maybe the officials could go to New York and experience what they have accomplished. The Welland Canal has so much potential and it is being wasted.

Lock 1 is a great and uncrowded little area to watch the ships coming through. There's a nice trail that goes along the river as well along the various locks.

The canal stretches all through Welland with paths accessible at many different spots throughout the city. Great to walk your dog's, jog, or bike. Usually not busy at all so you'll probably have the paths all to yourself.
