More
For a unique arts and conservation day-out, visit Rotoroa Island in Auckland’s beautiful Hauraki Gulf. Rotoroa was New Zealand’s first and longest running addiction treatment centre until its closure in 2005. Today, after a five year redevelopment programme, the restoration of heritage buildings and the construction of an award-winning museum and exhibition centre, it is a conservation estate rich in social history. Swim, relax, explore; sandy beaches, heritage buildings, exhibitions, nature trails, art, boutique accommodation and more.

To say I love it here is something of an understatement. Rotoroa Island is a paradise easily accessible from Auckland that never seems to get busy. Booking in advance is a must though as there are often school trips on random days which fill the...More

The island is simply beautiful - you feel like you are there all by yourself. The hiking trails are really well marked, and it's easy to do most of the walking in two hours. The beaches, especially Men's Bay, are just stunning. There is a...More

I love ferries, so the 75 minute trip from Auckland to Rotoroa Island was perfect. The crew were great and it was interesting to see Waiheke Island from the sea. When we arrived at the island, there was an introduction to the island and a...More

We drove to Orapiu on Waiheke Island and were picked up by the 360 Discovery ferry from Auckland en-route to the Coromandel. It's just a 10-minute cruise across to Rotoroa where disembarking passengers are met by the resident manager and briefed on the wild-life and...More

Fabulous boat trip and wonderful day walking around the island. If you want to see all the island there is quite a bit of walking involved and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Boats permitting you only need 4-5 hours there.

The island used to be run by the Salvation Army many years ago and alcoholics were sent here as pert of their "drying out" period. Today it remains a treasure, reminding us of our past endevours and an island sanctuary for some of our rare...More
