About
This parish church was a cathedral until 1828. when the diocese of Rab was repealed. Recent discoveries of the parts of the architectonic decoration and a nearby baptistery indicate its early Christian origin from the 4th and the 5th centuries. The early Christian singularities, polygonal outer rim of the apse and a few capitals in the colonnade, were preserved in the three-naval basilica.

Biggest and very decorated church on the island

The building has the best position on the top of the town. There is a range of six or even more different big or small churches. Cathedral is old Romanesque construction with some older remains and improvements of all periods till today. Some interesting sculptures (Christ on cross), some works of Andrija Aleši and interesting treasury with skull of Christopher. You can buy some souvenirs and books in different languages.

This 12th. Century Parish Church, originally the Cathedral of Rab, built in Romanesque style and on the upper street in the old town is well worth visiting. The highlight though for us was the 26 metre high bell tower which you can climb to the top for amazing 360 degree views of the town, harbour and out to sea. The climb however is not for the faint hearted, four stories up steep wooden stairs, the final tier up a small metal ladder and then through a small stone opening to the outside terrace. It is worth though as the photo opportunities are amazing. There is a small cost of 15 Kunas, about £1.70, for the entrance fee.

At the end of the Upper Street. Go inside the church, there is also a small museum, and do climb the tower. Do not miss it, I won't say more. Then walk to the left, to Saint Antony the monk church. All together , so very beautiful!
On your way along the Upper street, before reaching tha Cathedral, you'll cross Saint Andrew church: if you ring the bell, inside the door to the right of the church, the nuns living there sell some small nice things: cards, honey.
