One of the premier places to visit in the San Vito area. Some very rare endemic birds, lovely collections of plantings. Nice little gift shop full of high quality handmade crafts.

Truly a birder's paradise
Mar 2019 • Friends
This is a private finca just outside of San Vito that is open to tourists and birders for a very modest fee. There is a delightful little curio shop with local crafts and cards. The caretakers are birders and love the area. They also provide great guide services when asked. Lilly, the new owner is a charming scientist who is excited to take over this birder's mainstay of the San Vito area. If you're a birdwatcher, all the locals will tell you not to miss Finca Cantaro!

A Special Place
Feb 2019 • Couples
Finca Cantaros was a real surprise for us. The gardens and walking trails were well tended and have a large and diverse array of plant specimens. Even though the area is going through a unusual "dry spell", many of the plants were flowering at the time of our visit I can only imagine how incredible it must be in the green season. They have many nice little trails and areas to sit and enjoy the birds and beautiful views.
The gift shop has some very nice local art and crafts for sale.
I highly recommend a visit for a couple of hours. Also great for kids.

East of Eden
Aug 2018 • Couples
We were lucky when we arrived at Finca Cántaros. Just before Gail and her husband wanted to leave the house we drove by. Just in time otherwise we stood in front of a closed fence.
But they invited us in! They asked us to put the car next to the rancho. Rancho stands for everything that has 4 poles with a roof on it, Gail explained. But this was a super luxury rancho! With a large table, a worktop and lighting. In the pouring rain they explained us quickly where we could take a shower and how the light had to turned out, etc.
When they left, we sat there cooking a dark botanical garden.
We slept well because in this part it cools down at night.
In the morning it became clear how big Finca Cántaros is. Gail has turned this pasture into an East of Eden ...
In 1960 a coffee plantation was laid out in this area. Then it was used as pasture ground. The ground was exhausted. Since 1994 the 7 hectares area has been wooded with local trees, palms, fruit trees and very many plants.
Last photo is the view from their terrain in the area. That's how it was before Gail went to work here. We loved it!

Thank you for your wonderful review! We were very glad you arrived in time for us to get you checked in for camping and that you enjoyed your visit. It’s always rewarding when visitors appreciate the restoration and reforestation that Gail has accomplished with this property, a project that we hope will continue for many years to come!

Lovely gardens, good value
Mar 2018 • Couples
The gardens are fairly compact and don't take too long to walk around. However, they are beautiful and the range of plants is stunning.

Extraordinary beauty and tranquility
Apr 2017 • Couples
This is a beautiful park in the southern zone of Costa Rica with a breathtaking view of downtown San Vito, gentle walking trails, exquisite plantings, a tranquil lake and the best gift shop south of San Jose. We live in San Vito and enjoy walking these trails endlessly, admiring the flowering trees, shrubs and plants all along the way. Several covered ranchos with benches and tables provide picnic spots or simply a chance to contemplate your good fortune to be here. Local people, foreign residents and nature travelers enjoy it equally. What a superb attraction!

Amazing property. Wonderful grounds to walk & explore.
Feb 2017 • Friends
I would definitely buy this place and live here if I could afford it. The grounds are like having acres of a bird paradise. We found some key birds here that we couldn't find anywhere else, in fact. I definitely would like to come visit here again. The owners, Gail & Harry, are a wonderful couple, and were engaging and helpful. Well worth the entry fee, and they have a unique gift shop as well.

The owners of this private reserve are taking every effort to make it a genuine experience of the region. Try to get there for 7 am to watch the birds.
