Nice to see the old ruins and what they have done with it. Special to think that it was a synagogue there..I believe they are still excavating. Also interesting to see the modern church they have on-site. Nice paintings and a neat replica of a boat inside. When we were in the church, there were a group of young people... More

Don't miss visiting Magdala. The historic ruins are impressive, but the highlight for many, including our group, was the beautiful new Church, with its gorgeous modern artwork & focus on women. In particular, the 'Encounter' space, under the Church, houses one of the most moving & spectacular artworks of the region.

The excavated synagogue is amazing - first century yet well-preserved. The other excavations are also fascinating and the new church is beautiful. The view of the Sea of Galilee through the window behind the altar in the shape of a ship is wonderful and the acoustics are something else. There's also a cafe and clean loos. Don't be put off... A few years back, a priest from Mexico purchased some land on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, near Tiberius. On this land, which was a ports right on the sea at the time of Jesus, a first century synagogue was found. Since the synagogue was in the town of Mandala, where Jesus' friend, Mary Magdalene was from, it... More

Even though it was raining when we visited Magdala, it was well worth visiting. It was wonderful to see the excavated areas and to be able to walk so near to them. How exciting that this is a relatively new discovery!

Newly opened excavation and well worth the wait. It was so inspiring. The synagogue is one that most probably Jesus actually attended at some point. How much better can it get?!

I had read about Magdala a few weeks before we were headed to Israel...but our tour guide was already on it. It turned out to be one of the best stops of the tour. To see the remains of a first century synagogue, to hear Father Tim tell the rich Bible Stories while sitting near the synagogue, to realize that... More

Magdala is a #1 site! Jesus was there for sure and you can see the remains of a synagogue were he would have certainly taught! The excavation has uncovered some beautiful tiles and artifacts. The location is easy to get to and doesn't require a lot of walking. The views are breathtaking there too and there are restrooms available. Magdala... More
