Aug 2019
Francavilla was a surprise for us. a typical Italian town with 4-5 pallazzo and excellent coffee! We discovered Francavilla just because our masseria was close butis a very nice little town and recommended for a walk!

Lots of interesting historical buildings

We have just bought a house in the local countryside and one of the reasons for doing so is this lovely historical town.
There are beautiful domed churches, the stunning castle and lots of magnificent houses built for rich merchants with impressive frontages.
Great place to wander or sit at a bar and watch the world go by.

A lovely place to take a relaxing walk among fine architecture
Jan 2015 • Solo
I love to walk a circuit around the historic centre. Start at the Castle, with the Post Office on your left and see the fine stone carved loggia balcony. turn right along infront of the castle (new tourist information office is inside entrance on left) Go to end of street. To your right is Chiesa S. Alfonso de' Liguori which has the most amazing frescos. To the left is Piazza Giovanni XXIII with two churches one being the Mother Church (Minor Basilica) with a bronze plaque in the centre of the the piazza marking the centre point of Salento. cross the piazza into Piazza Munumento (good bakery) turn left down to Piazza Dante (Off to the left is a carved balcony and street with some nice little restaurants) Go straight into Piazza Umberto I to see the fountain and clock tower and have coffee or icecream in one of the cafes. Return to the castle via Corso Umberto to the left of the old market building with the large columns on the front. This is just a small taste of the historic centre, but if you have time please explore further down Via Roma to the Porto Carmine Arch and other streets around where you will see fine stone Palazzo buildings, churches, shops and cafes. Also visit the Saturday morning market and the towns festival around September 14th.

Tour of Puglia
We came to Francivilla after speaking to tourist information in Oria. The town is pleasant enough, but lacks the interest generated in other local towns. We spent at most an hour walking through the old town and were surprised how small it was. Happy to pass through, but wouldn't recommend staying there if just for the surroundings.
