Nice castle
Jul 2019 • Family
We walked the castle and ruins in Avio. There are many rooms to walk through. None of the rooms are furnished so you need to use your imagination to finish the rooms. I do prefer walking the ruins like this versus a fully restored castle as I like to feel the old age of the castle. The frescos in a few of the rooms were interesting to see and the entrance fee was reasonable.

original way of visiting a castle with your kids doing a treasure hunt!

Great idea giving you a map and some hints to make your children (and you) searching for stickers around the castle and at the same time exploring this wonderful location

Lovely location

They only have two tables on the terrace where you have no view of the mountains. They have a three course menu and that leaves you not many choices to choose from. But it’s nice to have a place to rest, have a drink and somewhere to eat after you climb up to the castle :)
We had a lasagna and veal with sauerkraut. The food was good.

Large castle grounds, beautifully maintained by FAI
Jul 2018 • Friends
This castle, with multiple buildings, some 5-stories tall, is a magical place, with nooks and tables under pergolas for sitting and relaxing. The buildings alone are a sight to see, with vestiges of chimneys, and elaborate frescoes. The grounds are beautifully maintained with roses and grape-vine pergolas. There is a small bar/restaurant nestled in a cool corner of an external wall, with a wonderful selection of local wines and grappa for sale. The views down the Adige river are spectacular. There is also a self-guided program for children, with audio boxes in many rooms which tell about the history of the castle as well as local traditions.

Be prepared to walk up and down a hill to and from the castle and parking lot, and be prepared to climb stairs throughout the castle. (Heels not advised.) But as they say in Italy, "Ne vale la pena!" (It's worth it!).

This is a treasure, beautifully restored and maintained by FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano).

Fun. Be prepared to walk up steep a hill. Very interesting place with great views and an excellent little restaurant which is worth the visit itself.

Fabulous

We went on a day when there were a lot of people and so we could only find a parking spot about half way up. The walk is steep and there were loads of slippery cobbles which, without the correct footwear, might be difficult for some people.

Once up there it is fascinating. Amazing frescos and a wealth of history. The tower is a steep climb but the views were amazing. Low beams should be watched out for as a member of our group hit his head quite badly, despite signs, due to failing light.

The castle is run by FAI - the Italian National Trust - and has been partially restored and was beautifully clean and tidy.

Great castle !

We just happened upon this wonderful castle! Driving in from Milan, we saw the sign and just pulled in. What a treasure! It's beautiful, well maintained and some parts still under renovation. The beautiful rooms with murals is like stepping back in time! We explored for a long time, and even had lunch in the little restaurant ( La locanda del Castello) and it was awesome ! I highly recommend visiting this!

Breathtaking Views and Fantastic Food
Jun 2017 • Couples
A short hike up the hill and you will gain the rewards from your efforts. You will see the most breathtaking views of the valley. The castle has two secrets. One of them is the frescoes of the 14th century that retain their vivid color and the other is the restaurant with superb gourmet food. Either one is worth the visit.

Lovely frescoes and Historic Graffiti
May 2017
We stopped by Catello di Avio on a lark. It stands close to the southern entrance of the Adige Valley. It's a lovely castle that is part restored, part left in ruin. The hike up to the castle is through vineyards and a bit of forest that runs by a stream. The views afforded by the placement of the castle are toward the south. The valley, the vineyards, and the south end of the mountains. Scattered throughout the castle there are some lovely frescoes, most of those that remain are secular in nature. It also has graffiti, some dates to the late 18th century, some to the 19th, some to WWII.

Spectacular views, A step back into history.
Sep 2015
We actually arrived at the Castle by taking a hiking trail which started near our B&B in Avio. This was a great end to our hike and each area/room/section of the castle was interesting and filled with historical background. It's not a super-long tour or extended area to see but there is ample opportunity to take in the panoramic views and the history of the differing parts of the castle. Fortunately, there were not too many other visitors, so we could take our time and enjoy each area. Well worth the visit. One memorable aspect of the castle tour was an on-going question and answer "game" to determine if you understood the history of each area. The right answer earned you a point. Fun, but some questions were not that easy unless you know history pretty well!
