Two caves one on top of the other Grotte d'Isturitz and Grotte d'Oxocelhaya. One way in covers both of them. Huge caves with ancient carvings and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. They were inhabited by the Neanderthals 80,000 years ago, and later by the first humans...More

Fascinating day at the Caves at Isturitz and Oxocelhaya, in the Basque country. Beautiful countryside with sheep, cattle or maize in every field. These caves were inhabited first by the Neanderthals 80,000 years ago, then by the first humans to settle in Western Europe, 40,000...More

The children were reluctant to go to the caves but were absolutely rapt once they got inside. Pity I am the only one who understands French in our family as the guide does not speak anything else. We were given a written guide in English...More

Very interesting visit and explanation. I personally learned a lot on cavemen. It was a nice change compared to other caves where you get the millionth explanation on stalagmites. The voice of the female guide was extremely annoying. Make sure your French is ok in...More

The visit was most interesting and the guide knowledgeable, it is a truly amazing sight to see. Well worth a visit, just don't forget to take a jumper, it is only 14 degrees in the cave. Enjoy

Amazingly preserved ancient caves with prehistorical etchings as well raw natural galleries to discover. Not to be missed. Only criticism: you can't take photos. And it is not for conservation reasons (which would be absolutely legitimate!) but because the cave is privately owned; and the...More

The first cave (or grotte), Isturitz, was used by prehistoric man and contains some ancient (14,000 year-old) cave etchings of animals - and some superb carvings in rock or bone, too, were discovered here. Visitors get to see those, and some of the cave wall...More

There are three caves in this privately-run complex, one above the other, but and the lowest of the three is unavailable to visit as a river runs through it. From the access point near the top of the hill in which they are located, you...More
