More
This is a regional natural reserve of Sicily, located 4 km SW of Aragon, and 15 km N of Agrigento. The area of the reserve is characterized by predominantly clay soils, which are dissected by ephemeral streams, fed by seasonal rainfall. The area of greatest interest is the hill of volcanoes, a sterile area of color from white to dark gray, populated by a number of mud volcanoes, about a meter high, where normally the gas escapes slowly mixed with clay and water salata.Il name "Macalube" (or according to some versions "Maccalube") derives from "Maqlub" Arabic which literally means "reversal" because, periodically and in a sudden, the hill of volcanoes exploding due to the escape of violent gas.

We visited the site just a few days ago, and it looks as if it will be permanently shut for a long time due to a fatal accident in 2014, when one of the volcanoes exploded.

Our tourist guidebook mentioned this site as one of natural interest, and close to Agrigento, so we took a break from the ruins and visited. We had a rental car with a GPS that had not been updated, so satellite navigation wasn't effective. This was...More

I go there often. This place is so different compared to the rest of the region. Really wild and suggestive, Populated by unusual vegetation being it in Sicily.

We were taken to the Maccalube by our friends who previously visited. Without them we probably would not have found it, as it is not well signposted. Very impressive seeing all the volcanic activity at close range. Definitely worth visiting if in the area.
