Vert interesting tour, the guide who also works in the distillery was awesome, he explained how the whole tradition of making rum in Guadeloupe is still alive and very important for the locals. We had a little tasting of a pure rum straight from the pipe and let me tell you it was delicious. Montebello Rum is the best traditionally made rum on the island, so if you are looking for a bottle or two you can buy it at the small shop they have next to the distillery or even fill up your own bottle with pure rum for a literally few quid.

It's all too common to make a visit only to be fed a pre-packaged, sanitised experience. This place is the real deal, and should be on everyone's must see list. If you miss the ramp to the 'shop', just turn in through the main gates and park in the car-park on the right. The shop is round the back of the distillery, don't be afraid of asking any of the employees for directions. If you ask in the shop, they will show you around (we were lucky as they were quiet so we got a personal tour!). The trip round was superb, nothing is hidden and they are rightly very proud of their work and products. If you ask questions you will get them answered - in detail. I particularly liked the 'petrol pump' like device for locals to fill their own containers with rum :). Once you have been round, you will find you are better placed to select some rums to taste. Once tasted, the desire to buy should be indulged. A couple of bottles will help you to re-live such a delightful experience.

It’s not an overtly touristic place as it is a working distillery. We almost drove past it because we couldn’t see an entrance (a ramp leads up and to the back). The young guy that works in the factory shop took us on a free tour of the distillery, both in French and in English, while it was going about its daily business. You can see the machines and distillation tanks up close, as well as the huge furnace that powers up the old steam engine that drives the whole operation. He showed us the hand cut bundles of sugar cane and explained the process of making rum. The smell of the distillery is amazing. We had an improvised tasting and then bought a few bottles. Overall an excellent experience.

We had a really pleasant visit to this distillery with the rum tasting in the end. The rum was super delicious, probably the best we tried on the island. During the tour we saw the oldschool steam machines (oldest working in Caribbean) and also tried the freshly squeezed sugar cane juice straight out of pipes. The guide was really friendly and knowledgeable, even recommended good places for quick lunch around.

The Montebello distillery was shown to us by an english speaking employee. Walking freely you can get in direct contact with the production chain. The tour was free. In the shop you can taste and buy their products. Worth the visit!
