Fantastic example of Hoysala architecture. The carvings are so intricate and detailed. We paid for a guide within the complex which was well worth it. Really enjoyed our visit

The intricate carvings and splendid architecture leave you in awe of people and craftsmen of the Hoysala Dynasty. Hire a guide if you really want to understand the architectural and historical details of the temple. Without a guide you would not be able to do justice to your visit to this place.

Must see place for history and architectural lovers. Get a guide inside the temple, per head 50 Rs. The way they explain makes you realize the greatness of Indian architects.

Right in downtown Belur, easy to find. Doesn't look like something special from outside and even the main temple not very imposing since tower on top was destroyed. But the inside is stunning!! 48 wonderful pillars carved in soapstone, each different and each a masterpiece. In very good shape. The star-shaped temple is covered on the outside by a myriad... We started Bangalore at 6 Am and reached Belur by 9.30. Road conditions are good. Taking guide is very important otherwise you will not understand anything. Take your time to observe each and every shila balike & hoysala's story. Even Vishnu's avatara, Mahabharata ramayana stories are crafted .

If you are driving, reach early during the day to get a decent parking spot. The temple and architecture is spellbinding. You can see carvings showing scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and a lot more of Indian mythology. The carvings are very impressive and are bound to leave a long lasting impression.

It is definitely a place to visit for people interested in architecture from few centuries back. Temple complex is very well maintained. A few hotels available in the town including a KSTDC managed one. Intricate carvings can be gazed upon for a few hours.
