About
The crystal clear light blue lagoon of Rummu quarry and the adjacent ash hill are a unique combination and a wonderful destination for a day trip. The mining of Vasalemma limestone and marble in the Rummu quarry started as early as 1938 and the prisoners of Murru Prison were used as labour. The spoil gradually turned into an ash hill. At one point, the work ended, the drainage of water was stopped, and the quarry flooded. The industrial buildings, equipment, and trees were submerged. You can enter Rummu quarry at summertime or with prior booking as the area is private territory. At summertime you can visit our summercafe, swim, hike up to the hill or take part of Murru prison guided tours! See you in Rummu!

The Rummu quarry is very nice and one of the highlights of my Estonia trip. I went by car with my Estonian friend. You must buy tickets online it costs 5€ per person. When we arrived, the gate was closed and a message said to call one number. We called and said we were there and they opened the door electronically. We could park the car and explore. The lake is impressive and so are the rock formations. There is supposedly an easy path to the right to go to top of the rock formation. There is also very nice view if you go to the left side and enter a ruined building. Apparently it is possible to book a tour of the old prison which should be very interesting. I am sure in summer it is even better because people can swim and dive and there is a cafe and toilet facilities which were closed when we there in April. I would go back 100%!

Absolutely worth a visit. It’s amazing how something that was abandoned some time ago now is a real tourist gem.

It’s nice that everyone can adjust the visit to their wishes - enjoy a pedal boat ride, climb up the hill or just spend some time relaxing at the beach or in a cafe.

Climbing up the hill is not very easy so be cautious about it, but the views are really cool!

We wanted to see everything linked with historical Rummu prison and diving should be the main priority for all the visitors as you get the chance to explore ruins under the water, instructors provide you a chance to see amazing views not only of the ruins, but also of a life under water. Besides, they are beautiful human beings so everything was explained in a very clear and understandable way. One of the best decisions I have made so far and I strongly recommend for others!!

We were there at around 7.30pm, place should be open till 9pm, at the entrance we paid 4€ each, not 3€ as it says here.
We parked the car at the parking inside, asked the staff if we can go for a swim in English, guy turned around and disrespectfully yelled in Russian - Again? So we asked him the same question in Russian and he said that they are closing down and we have to leave ASAP, we told him that we just came, we have paid already and girls at the entrance said we can stay here till 9pm, so we had about 1,5hour, he said he doesn’t care, they didn’t have a lot visitors today, so they are closing.
My friends daughter was with us, when that bloke was getting into his car he yelled disrespectfully - if you won’t be at the entrance in 10min, you can sleep here till tomorrow morning with that kid.
We came all the way from Latvia to see that unhappy old c*nt who took our money, kicked us out and refused to give our money back.

Visited in August2019, excellent weather. We really enjoyed this place as ash-hills with lake created calm and beautiful place. In sunshine day we spend 3-4h. Swimming, hiking, sunbath ))
Building under water& shark man-made hills, unusual shape for Estonia.

In the past, the small village of Rummu used to be associated with an infamous hard labour penal institution where 7000 prisoners quarried limestone, popularly known as "Vasalemma marble". To keep the ever deepening quarry from being inundated, water was being pumped out day and night.

About a decade after the collapse of the Soviet Union the process of relocating the prisoners and closing down the quarry was begun. When the prison fell into a state of abandonment, there was no need to keep pumping out the water, and the quarry gradually began filling with water, which eventually turned into a lake that consumed the abandoned buildings, machinery, trees, the whole infrastructure.

Today the area on which the quarry is situated is private property. Entrance fee to take a walk or go swimming in the crystal clear lake - 3 euros. The man-made, mother-nature-designed hills are up to 70 metres high and offer panoramic views. They ate NOT ash-hills, as many people think. They are made of fine limestone screenings, a by-product of quarrying. Ash-hills are completely different. The lake itself, with the submerged buildings, prison walls, abandoned mining equipment and machinery, has become famous as the divers paradise. If you don´t do diving, you can enjoy a guided light raft tour on the lake late in the evening, in the dark, with spotlights illuminating the tops of the trees and the roofs of the houses as you slowly glide above them.
Almost no physical effort required.

Less than one hour drive from Tallinn so worth visiting even for a day trip. For 3€ entrance fee you can stay 24 hours. Overnight camping allowed. Small cafe, sup board rentals and diving operator on the area also. Water is Crystal clear and you can see the trees at the bottom of a submerged limestone quarry.

We came here on a Thursday near Easter time and found that the whole area was shut. there was noone guarding the main entrance and it was not accessible through the front.

We took a Bolt taxi here and it only cost around 20 EUR, and the taxi driver was somewhat confused by how we would make it back. This was a valid concern as to what was to unfold later.

We decided to wander round the back as according to some reviews you should be able to find an entry way towards the back. They weren't wrong - there are side entrances where people have wandered through before.

You can walk across a small dip into the whole area and see the old abandoned prison area. There were a few other tourists during this time who i assume would have gladly paid the entrance were it open! It really is a spectacular sight this place.

The waters are green, bright and uniquely haunting. Do come visit if you are in the area.

You should probably try and arrange transport back out to Tallin if that is where you are coming from as you will struggle to get a Bolt come pick you up. We wandered to the closest town and eventually was able to catch a bus to Paldiski (this is a once a day bus, so do be aware of the timetable and don't rely on chance). You will be able to take a train from Paldiski to Tallinn from here.
